: Spun CV Joint Today.... Anyone Else?
Gato Gordo 05-23-2004, 02:13 AM Hey Guys,
I was leaving my house today and I accidentally put my truck in 4 Hi somehow.
Anyway, I make a hard left to leave my driveway and stomp on the gas and POP!!!!!!
What the??!?!
I drive down the street and hear this nasty grinding. Messed around a little trying to figure out what happened and pulled back in the driveway.
Turns out I spun my front driver CV from just taking off hard in 4x4 on pavement.
Seems like it must have been a bad part. Right? I'm very surprised that it would snap that easy.
I realize my 35" tires didn't help matters (traction). I wouldn't have been surprised if this happened in 4Lo, but 4Hi?
Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem.
Anyone?
GG
Funny Note: The tow truck driver shows up and on the side of his truck there is a DMAX Decal! He said his tow truck has the same D/A drivetrain and just a bigger diff. He raved about the d-max performance.
Felt a little bit better being towed by a dmax.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Dmax Tim 05-23-2004, 07:16 AM I'd say it was a combination of the axle turned and power.
Yes wide 35" tires don't slip much.
The guys here doing 4 WD launches are going in a staight line(or trying http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif).
It could have something to do w/ your lift changing the axle angles too.
Mackin 05-23-2004, 09:54 AM I'm interested to see if they warranty it ....
Big meats ,Lift kit ,Tight turn, 4x4 ,dry pavement ,smells of breakage ...

hdmax 05-23-2004, 10:01 AM Mackin, This is one place that the warranty won`t help unless he knows the Manager or they are just a good ole bunch of guyshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I can not believe you wouldn`t notice the front tires pullin` while turning out on pavement. Even with the puny stock 245`s is very noticeable. But none the less, Sorry to hear about it, and hope they are a good ole bunch of guys.Edited by: hdmax
3500dmax 05-23-2004, 02:02 PM What do you mean you spun the CV? Did you break the inner or outer joint? The reasons for it breaking have already been posted. Do not use 4wd on the pavement if you can help it.
Gato Gordo 05-23-2004, 10:09 PM Hey Guys,
I'm just very surprised that it spun soooo easily.
The waranty isn't an issue. My service manager is a long time friend who takes really good care of me.
As for noticing the 4wd being engaged, I didn't move in 4wd. I bumped it and then took off.
I don't think the lift had anything to do with it, probably just the tires. The lift is a pro-comp and it's all drop down so the cv angle doesn't change.
Just seemed like a possible weak link. The thing that worries me is driving in snow. When I hit a scraped parking lot or get some traction is it going to happen again?
I'm pretty sure it was the outer, but i won't know for sure until tomorrow.
It sucks getting the new rig lifted and all ready to go and now it's back to the dealer....

If you cranked the torsion bars at all the angles may have increased. Also having the wheel turned may put the CV in a bind and this is when they are most vulnerable.

Better to have the CV go than the front differential. While stronger CVs would help they act like a fuse which is probably a good thing. You shouldn't have this problem in the snow because the snow will allow your wheels to slip some, thats why 4wd should not be used on dry pavement.Edited by: y2kboti
Super Diesel 05-24-2004, 12:32 AM Don't let our trucks know that when were rippin through the 1/4 mile. Sounds like a faulty CV to me. Super Diesel
3500dmax 05-24-2004, 01:34 AM The reason guys at the strip may not experience this problem is because they are driving in a straight line.
ratlover 05-24-2004, 09:35 AM What he said......ask the guys that wheel hard. Bigger tires and off road=eaten CV's They are ok if they are all in a line but seem to get pissy and thier strnght goes down big time if they are at angles(turning, suspention cycling, or if you have the bars cranked)
Does still sound like it was weak though unless you turned the wheel and really romped on it.
Ripnsumlip 05-30-2004, 04:52 PM Do I see a post from a fellow Allcoaster?????http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Gato Gordo 05-30-2004, 05:30 PM What's up Rip.
I'm a Bloodydeck'er actually. =)
Small internet dude!
Gotta have a diesel to pull the boat...
Ripnsumlip 05-31-2004, 10:55 AM How do you like your truck?
I posted on Allcoast and got only 1 reply.
Is it all that you thought it would be?
