: Oil Temp Vs Oil Pressure when haulin
BlackSSmoke 07-27-2006, 08:41 AM Guys I need your expert advise on this one. As you can tell from my question below that I aint haulin much with my truck, please someone explain to me why my truck last nite was loosing oil pressure when I had a full size trailer and my Impala SS. It seemed that after 1/2 hour on the highway and speeds at 75 mph the oil pressure start dropping. It usually hold about 62psi of oil pressure. Last nite it was down to 40 psi. Is it cuz of the oil being so hot? Any advise would be appreciated
Thanks

Tacklewasher 07-27-2006, 09:55 AM Pull the dipstick and clean it with a chunk pf paper towel. Look for different rings on the paper towel and the smell of diesel (well, don't look for the smell, smell for the smell). Also see if the crankcase level has come up.
You may have an injector problem putting fuel into the crankcase.
smokydog 07-27-2006, 02:53 PM my 03 does the same thing when i pull my 5er. i don't think this is a problem as i have seen other posts about this.
dragon41 07-27-2006, 04:53 PM Did you mention what you are running for oil, eg. 10w30 or 15w40?
sixfoot 07-27-2006, 08:55 PM Like smokydog said, my 03 does the same thing when towing my 5er.
BlackSSmoke 07-28-2006, 11:12 AM I am using 15W40 oil. This morning I checked the oil lever and I could not see any oil on the deepstick! I had top add some in there to make it right. Could it burning oil?
Another thing is that the trans was running real hot that night as well. More that 200*F. Is that normal under 8,000-8,500lbs of haulin a$$ @ 75 mph? Then I limb it. I freaked out for a moment and after I dropped off the trailer and car at my house, took my truck for a spin to see if the SES light would go away, and it did. Now it runs fine again.
Los Lobos 07-28-2006, 12:25 PM The oil becomes less viscous when it heats up thus resulting in a pressure drop. Since your oil was low it probably helped the oil heat to a higher temperature.
The increased tranny temps for 2001-03 are because the general located the undersized cooler behind that large chrome strip that is in the center of your grill(i.e poor air flow and cooling). A replacement cooler such as the "Mike L. cooler" will put your trans temp back into check. Don't take my word on it because I don't as of yet run that cooler but there are countless people in the tranny forums that rave on the lower temps from the "Mike L. cooler".
BlackSSmoke 07-28-2006, 03:29 PM Thanks for your input
malibu795 07-28-2006, 05:44 PM i swore my tranny cooling lines rans into the radiator pass side...... on my LB7
problemchild 07-28-2006, 10:28 PM Mine does it hauling NOTHING. All I have to do is go up a slight hill and/or have it get hot outside.
Synthetic is much worse then delo. I switched back to delo. Its better now. But not great.
The trucks DONT HAVE A BIG ENOUGH OIL COOLER OR RADIATOR!!
Just more of the same, Im getting used to it.
BigdaddyG 07-29-2006, 01:30 AM PC mine does better with Synthetic. We seem to have similar oil pressure but I noticed mine had slightly less oil pressure at idle when towing or hot with dino than with synthetic oil. I have been running Mobil1 but just put Royal Purple in since I can't find any Mobil 1. RP is 15-40 and I was hoping fro an idle pressure bump but no such luck, it's the same as M-1.
BlackSSmoke 08-01-2006, 10:11 AM So, last nite I saw on my driveway lots of little drips of oil. (This was after I hauled my Impala SS and that enclosed trailer, maybe all together 8,000lbs...). Anyway, It looks that I lost around 1 maybe 1.5 gallons of oil that nite hailung from somewhere under there. Oil change and oil filter change tonight. I will wipe everything down, do the oil change and see if it still leaks.
Do you guys ever expereience something like that before? I mean this is pretty bad, ya know. The exhaust pipe is all oily, the tailgate is alll oily.... -:t
Leter
Thnx

Los Lobos 08-01-2006, 11:03 AM Is the oil coming from inside the tailpipe? Or is the undercarriage oily?
