: About to go buy a diesel; any must haves or things to watch for?
treyZ28 05-21-2004, 11:56 PM GMS is awesome, they offered me $3000 short of what I paid for my 1/2 ton 4.8 new. With the rebates out, I just couldn't turn down the GM employee price (you wouldn't believe it if I told you! about $350.mo with 13k down)
I'm looking at a silver birch ext cab 4x4 with LS package, forged wheels, power folding mirrors that have the little turn signal in them and the obligatory Manual transfer casehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif (my only req aside from ext cab 4x4). Its a Allison with the 590ft lb new motor. No leather or anything, but I dont think I'll miss it.
It also has power seats, wheel flares, and the cold weather stuff. Of coarse it has the heavy duty suspension and trailoring package (standard?) I wish I had rubber floor mats but I get carpet instradhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
Anything I should ask or definately get before I leave the dealer? Dont assume I'd know even the basics, first time diesel buyer!
One more quick question; can 305/70/16s be mounted on the stock wheels for about a week or two until I order some new wheels? (where can I get a set of 16x8 wheels).
Dutchie 05-22-2004, 06:37 PM Besides giving me a great deal, my dealer threw in a bug deflecter and vent shades without blinking an eye. I also asked him to throw on some 285's which wasn't a problem, all I had to do was pay the difference and it totally changed the look of the truck.
You can fit 305's on the stock rims but you will have to move the bumper ahead a little to keep the tires from rubbing, especially when you cut the wheels while backing up.
You can get an aftermarket floor mat from Extreme that basically covers the whole carpet area and tucks under the door sill. I bought one and its the cat's ass.
Good luck and enjoy the new truck!!
st_pinetree 05-22-2004, 07:16 PM Pick up some of the molded to fit floor liners (or better yet, get the stealer to throw them in http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif) Such as "Husky liners". They will protect your carpet and keep it dry, thereby eliminating your carpeting woes. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
treyZ28 05-22-2004, 08:24 PM They gave me the trade in sheet stating $18000 for my truck (03 silverado ext cab 4x4 Z71) and they took $550 off for a brake booster code to repair.
I saw this and told them
a. its under waranty so it costs you nothing, infact you make money
b. it is because of the HD alternator, and I will happily put a stock one in.
This guy tried to play 100 math games on me.
Apparently, he makes $500 if he doesn't give it to me, but gives me the $500; he looses $500. how is there a $1000 difference on a $500 deal? Shouldn't he be breaking even worst case. There is no way hes making zero money a first time buyer at his dealership.
Another explanation was "if this wasn't there, it would be worth this much, but takes me $500 to repair it, its worth $18500. but if I dont pay that $500 its still worth the same amount http://www.ls2.com/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif I know it doesn't make sense but its the way it is"
I'm just going to go to another dealership, show them that trade in sheet and do the same deal. Morons. I was buying a $42,000 truck with $15,000 down and I just handed them my credit info. I got it back and walked out not looking back once.
I just didn't feel comfortable dealing with a dealership that wouldn't work with me (that was my ONLY negotation request).

ya dealers dont understand costomers.
i am 17 years old looking at 41000 trucks. weird. i understand but when they laugh at you when you say d-max they say shouldnt you start off with an s-10. well i walked out. i went to anougher chevy dealer preasured me into having me fill out forms when all i wanted to know where the d-max's are. a simple "hey can you point me to the d-max's" so i walked accross the street and went to the other dealer and told them my story and wouldnt you know the boss LADY from next door herd my storry and she wasnt happy. the dealer ship was hurd chevy in jonston RI. stay away this dealer preasures you into doing something you dont want to do. or you will be standing their looking for some one to talk to you. the most they will say is excuse me. if you ask for help they say " oh some one will be right with you" you end up walking out. hurd gmc is a decent dealer got every type of truck instock. but i think customer servise award goes to imperial chevy milford mass.
so good luck finding a good dealer. and some hints are settle for what you want ( you probly knew that) and find out where you engine block heater is! and ask if they will run it to the front of the truck for you.
and find out what all break in proceedures are on the truck.Edited by: yamahagrizzly

SteveNorCal 05-23-2004, 01:06 PM treyZ28,
You were very smart in walking out of that stealership!!
In time (I know you don't want to hear that) you will learn by trial & error by going to different stealerships, you WILL find a decent one. Don't be in a big hurry, do your homework and you'll save some money. Know what you want before you go! Then go in there with that knowledge and let them know it. I know your age will be a problem for most of them, but like I said, let them know what you want and what your price is and go from there AND stick to your plan!!!

Thanks man. Although I'm an engineer(student/co-op) by profession/nature; I spent 2 years in sales in highschool with one of the best salesmen for his industry.
I leared a lot of things but the MOST important is that you HAVE to be willing to walk out of the deal (buying / selling) at any time. You cant get caught up in the moment and "just go for it." Its like the Yankees just "giving" boston the series. And walk out because the deal is longer good, not because you want a call back or as a way to make them desperate (although this works, still be ready to call it a failure). Them being nice is NOT a legit reason to "give" them the better half of the deal. Its a way to persuade you into doing so. Think of it as bait.
Working with someone implies a compromise; not just giving up $500. I am happy to work with anyone but I am not willing to beg and plea.
There was just a lot of stuff that didn't add up. He contradicted himself too many times. "we are in buisness to make money, not lose moeny" and then "we are breaking even with this deal." By breaking even, they lose because it cost them money to have a sales man working with me, their work, their time, etc etc. No to mention the money they now have wrapped up inmy truck until it sells, and the risk invovled with holding on to it, it depreciating and maybe not getting what they are planning.
His math didn't add up right. You cant be making $500, give me $500 off and lose $500 on the deal. Then he proceeded to tell me hes being 100% honest with me. "I know it doesn't make sense but thats the way it is" - no, everything makes sense, especially basic linear mathematics. And why would you want to break even with me? I didn't even try to negotiate yet. Its my first time settign foot in that dealership. None of my friends or family have ever gone there. I asked for a trade in price and my buy price is preset (employee price). You flat out GAVE me a price that you would break even on? I could see giving a good deal after hours of tough negotation, but why just flat out break even with me if you are in buisness to make money?
You REALLY have to question EVERY WORD someone tells you in any kind of deal like this. You can't assume anything is what it appears to be. I really go into dealerships, get as much info out of them and on the drive home think about everything they said and why they said it and kind of put a puzzel together. I just got bad vibes with too much little stuff not fitting 100%.
I'm just going to take their written trade in offer of $18,550 and go to another dealership. Tell them its the easiest deal in the world. Get me $18,250 and me financed for ANY intrest rate (even 25%) and I'll sign the papers. Any GM dealers here?Edited by: treyZ28
ockgator 05-24-2004, 10:44 PM WRONG MOVE.... look up retail on your truck, either nada.com or kbb.com. Go in there and work retail to retail, they want to work their retail to your wholesale. Don't tell what your payoff is,if any.you'll be suprised how cheap that new lly can be.Do the quick math in your head and give them an offer and stick to it, it's your way or the highway.....
