Interested in buying stainless nerf bars for my crew cab was wandering if anyone had used the cheaper ones like on ebay or on the net. They are half the price and still made from stainless. What could really happen to them.

Mounting brackets could be really crappy, and some of those say stainless but the actual mounting brackets arent. Thats where you run into problems.

Wondered the same thing and finally took the leap of faith over the internet at www.anythingtruck.com (http://www.anythingtruck.com) The goods arrived in two days - the brackets appear good quality steel - any welds on the hardware / brackets look well done - the tubes shine and have no wrinkles in the corners. It took about 45 minutes to mount 'em and everything fit. There were a lot of extra brackets & bolts, no doubt a result of the options for various model trucks but still more that I expected. Overall satisfaction - High

Remember, all nerf bars sit different on the truck.
Like:
1.) close to the body but lower than the body.
2.) stick out from from body and lower.
3.) up to the body but outward from the body.
4.) close to the body and up to the body.

Took me awhile to see the right truck for the look I was going for. Went with Westins for the #4 choice.

Take your time to see what you are really looking for and get a good name brand quality product (make sure you get stainless). Ya, I know $ is always an issue, but if your going to do it.....DO IT RIGHT.

Just my opinion and thoughts.

The ONLY brand that sells stainless steel nerfs that come with stainless steel mounting brackets, bolts, nuts, and washers is Nasta. Not even Westin. The mounting hardware is usually powdercoated (or not powdercoated) mild steel or galvanized mild steel.

I put a pair of chrome plated stainless steps on mine. Ordered them from Summit Racing. Was about $269 and was their brand. Not a bad price I thought after seeing the prices on some others. Mount using all 3 body mounts per side. Pretty solid and not bad looking. Definitely functional for some of my shorter family members.

[They are half the price and still made from stainless. What could really happen to them]

I have been in the metal fabrication/welding field for over 40 yrs. There are different grades of stainless and there is some that is so low in those properties that it will rust just like it was steel. It can up to some of the aircraft grades that many of the people in this world would not be able to afford a small piece of it. You have to be knowledgeable in just what you want the product to do for you.
I have access to stainless and aluminum as I build Fire Rescue trucks so my running boards on my truck are 1/4 in thick Diamond plate aluminum with 1/2 inch support that I cut and shaped to fit to the body mounts and they look nice I think but they might not to those who want stainless.
I dont even own a stainless gas grill because the things are so darn thin they burn up but everyone that gets one says the same thing over and over, ( I got a Stainless Grill)

Sorry I will get off the soapbox here but look and make sure it will do what you are wanting it to before you buy.

I really wanted to get a set of Putco boss bars, but they were a bit too much $$$ for me. Went with the smittybuilts, cause they gave me a good deal on them. $300 CAD, couldn't pass them up. Have a look around, find a set you like on a truck and then take down the name. As Bodysurfer said above they all fit different.

Im a firm beleiver in you get what you pay for.But the reason that i was wandering is my local supplier that i buy this kind of stuff from has had some problems with Westin so i was just figuring why spend 400. or so on Westin when you can buy something to have problems with for 1/2 the money then i can put more into my truck in horse's,exhaust, some other good stuff. I just got it on the road a couple of weeks ago so i cant wait to get started.

I bought my smittybuilts because my buddy that runs a parts store couldnt get a set of westins unless he had them freighted from Tulsa to St.Louis and with there already high prices I couldnt justify it. He got me the polished stainless smittybuilts for $250 out the door.
