In the back of my owners manual it states that I can order service manuals from Helm. The LLY manuals have not been released yet but I was wondering if anyone has ordered previous manuals and could perhaps comment on quality of information and ease of use for a new diesel owner.

The manuals are $130 each, are they worth it? Are they detailed with photos? Are they similar to Hanes or Clymer types?

There is also one for the Al trans, is this worth while as well?

Thanks in advance

Yes they are worth the money, extremely detailed,
much better than the generic manuals haynes.
These are factory shop manuals. When we contacted HELM inc the manuals had not been released because the MANUFACTURER (GM) had not released them for the public yet.

You can get the CD version ($300) from Helms which completely covers the LLY. It seems to have all of the same information as the paper. Not having the paper, I can't say for sure. I have bought a set of the service manuals for every vehicle I have ever owned and always carry them with me when I travel out of the US. But they get bigger and heavier every year. After using the CD version, I find that I prefer it.

The local GMC shop doesn't own a single set of the paper manuals so I don't know that they are even printed. They go online and see the same screens that you see from the CD's. Another option is subscribing to the online system which gives you access to the latest and gratest plus bulletins, etc. That costs $900 for a years subscription but at the end of the year you have nothing.

If you spring for the CD's, check that you are getting the latest version (April, 2004).
