What would I have to do to prevent codes if I remove the cat on an LBZ?

You might also just try removing the cat and see if you get codes or not. Some say they do, some never get a code.

Might as well install the blocker plate at the same time. Careful those edges are sharp :)

I've noticed more power, quicker turbo spool, more smoke, and you can hear the turbo whine nice and loud :) I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone in support of keeping a cat (unless emisions are in effect-:t )

... also for the GMC fans out there its a weight reduction for us "Silverado" guys to keep up to you "Sierra" guys with the lighter wieght emblems and all):h

If I have to take it in to the dealer I'll just put that exhuast back on it...Not really a big deal, doesn't take more than 2 hrs from start to finish doing an exhuast. I also might go straight pipe, I heard they sound bad ***! I don't have the truck yet but I might have it by the weekend. When I get it i'll let you guys know what I think of straight pipe and no cat :muahaha:

I am responding to tennykimble - the real question is "why do they put a cat on a diesel in the first place?". It is my understanding that they are put on to reduce emissions by "re-burning" the exhaust. But a diesel has much less emmisions when compared to a gasser. So while a gasser may need the cat to reduce emissions, a diesel does not comparatively (someone who has more knowledge than I can correct me). In addition to this the cat will trap soot and clog up your exhaust. JMHO on my limited knowledge.

I removed my cat sometime ago and experienced from what I can remember a 401 code. My chip reader told me that there was a back pressure problem. I would clear the code only to have it reappear anytime I am under-load, i.e., pulling a heavy trailer. However when not under-load the engine warning light goes off..

I am pretty sure it actually isnt a catalytic convertor. I am pretty sure it is more of a trap.

thats nice...... but what if the truck breaks down and has to be taken in ( to the stealer ) on the hook? then what will they do when they put it on the lift and see the cat missing? i'll tell you.. they clock in on your wallet, because any reason to not claim warranty trust me.. they will !!

Oh I know they will, but I have AAA and will have it towed to my house! And if they can't prove that taking the cat out damaged it then they're screwed. Theirs a law for that, can't remember what it's called though.

Yeah the (whatever it is law) they must prove 100% that the missing cat caused the problem.
