Question?? Maybe a stupid one, but here it goes.

I replaced my spin on filter the other day but the guy that had it before me must have changed it and not replaced the magnet.

What exactly is the magnet for? Catching metal shavings or securing the filter?

Thanks, Neil

Catching metal. Get one, Eric(dmaxallitech) can hook you up with it and some filters for pretty reasonable.

Neil,

You might want to think about changing dealers if they "never heard of it" every Allison comes with one.

Blame GM for the magnet being left off. The techs are trained in a three day course on the Duramax. The big problem lyes with the fact that we( automotive industry ) are not bringing in new blood to train. Nobody wants to be a so called grease monkey any more. We are not grease monkeys but highly trained techs that constanly go to school and seminars .We read tech at night sometimes instead of watching TV with the family. We donate time to vehichles without pay sometimes to make something work, learn something , or just see if we didn't have a better idea. I have done over 25 Allisons and have not found a magnet in the spin-on filter except for Nick's truck.( Nick don't let nothing get buy him; smart doodhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif) All the trucks were serviced by the dealer.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif I am afraid we are going to see things get worse in automotive service because nobody wants to do it anymore.

I just changed mine five minutes ago.

My dealer told me to change it at 7,500miles.....so I did. Pre-filled it and put the new one on. As I was looking at the old one I noticed the magnet! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pinch.gif Lucky for me I found it....pulled to new one off and put the magnet(cleaned) back into its home. I can really see how this can go unnoticed....if someone is rushing this job. As for the trained mechanic....there is no excuse....GM SHOULD MAKE SURE THEY HAVE ALL THE INFO AVALIABLE TO THERE TECHS!

Now I know about it and it should never happen again......I hope!

Neither dealership in my home town have their Techs doing service work. They both have young kids doing it. I visit the Techs 2 or 3 times a week. Someone is always on the the GM service site on the computer. I don't know how they keep up with all the changes from model to model and year to year. They are a lot smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. They are half mechanic and half computer Tech. They have my respect. Later! Frank

thanks for your words. we are more then grease monkeys.
I went to 2 years of tech school and have take the gm diesel schooling.gm never tells us of little changes we all learn by making one mistake..I remember when the new master window switches came out they did not inform us the switch does not pull up its screwed into the back of the door pannel. the first one i did I pulled and pulled until the door pannel went"pop"....but as they always are 6 months later the send info out to inform us... maybe they say tons of broken door pannels and said oops...the lly comes out and our dealer does not even have thw tools required to diag it...so I bought my own...

Patrick, you are one of the exceptions. Those replies are for those guys there putting in their 8 hours for retirement and insurance. NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTING WRONG WITH THAT. I'm just not one of those guys.

I supplemented my OEM magnet with a Filtermag also. Planning to cut open when I service it next and see what I find...
