: 02 Duramax Injectors
I've got an '02 GMC 2500HD w/Duramax/Allison w/53,000+ miles on it. Last week it began getting a little hard to start and, at times, cranked for quite a while before it started. I took it to the dealer and he said there was a fuel pressure problem and, after consulting the factory, said that there was too much fuel being returned which cut down on the pressure. They said to replace ALL the injectors. I guess I've got two questions. First, does this sound reasonable? Secondly, once they have the injectors, how long should it take to replace them and do a flow test on the engine?
hdmax 05-21-2004, 11:18 AM Did you change the fuel filter? I would think so, but thought I`d ask. That is what it sounds like. The amount of fuel returning does not sound like it would cause the hard to start. But I could be wrong. And a dirty filter would without a doubt cause a hard to start situation.
I did change the fuel filter and it didn't make a difference. While we're on the subject, is it OK to use an aftermarket filter or should I stick with the GM or a specialty fuel filter?
WillowCreekStable 05-21-2004, 12:37 PM I have an '02 that developed a starting problem. The injection pump was replaced first, then all 8 injectors. Problem solved.
I think flat rate for injector replacement is about 8 hours, some of the better tech here are 4-6 hours.
My story is at http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5383&KW=WillowCreekStable
I read the thread about your problem. The only difference is I didn't get a Grand Prix...I got a Daewoo Leganza. That's the other reason I'm anxious to get my truck backhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif! Sounds like the same scenario. Hope to get it back today! Thanks!

Spag, from what I understand on the fuel filters. No matter who puts their name on them, they are still made by Racor. Racor has the rights to that filter. I try to find the ones at the best price. Eric a supporting vendor has some at a good price. You can go to his website and check them out. Click Here (http://www.gmdieseltech.com/store2/)
dmaxalliTech 05-21-2004, 04:07 PM Excess return flow can/will cause a hard/no start condition. Even a tech-2 may not pick up that problem, only way to tell is with a return volume test....
newnamlawn 05-21-2004, 05:41 PM this is what mine is doing right now, Hard to no start at all. Tech-2 showed nothing wrong, changed fuel filter and re primned and did fine for about 1/2 a day. I am going to sit down and have a serious chat monday when i go back in.
Super Diesel 05-22-2004, 02:04 AM Just got my 02 back for the same thing (problem) last monday. The injectors slowly got louder over a 5 month period. Finally took it in last week and they found (after diag. for 2 days) the injectors were not going over 13,000 psi instead of 23,000. Truck had 53,000 on it. They said the balance rates were out too. All 8 replaced. Super Diesel

Guess these modern diesel engines are a little different then the Military trucks/tanks I worked on 20-25 years ago.
Bearman 05-23-2004, 07:02 PM I had all 8 injectors replaced at 60000 miles, now at 6800 miles it is having the same problem again. Will probably go into the shop again next week for injectors. Sure is tough running a busness that requires a truck when it is in the shop all the time.
Cheers

duramax/a 05-23-2004, 11:19 PM I an new to the diesel scene. I love my truck so far. But I have a question, Is there any chance that all the enhancements (Juice ect) may have an ill effect on the injectors? From what I am hearing the pressures get turned up and the timing is adjusted.

newnamlawn 05-24-2004, 05:17 PM Well my truck is in the shop till thursday getting 8 new injectors and i don;t even get a rental car. It sucks when you need a truck to run errands all day and you have nothing to drive. Oh well. Dealer said it was because it was a commercial truck. I will let yall know what goes on with my new injectors

motovet 05-24-2004, 06:59 PM Eric, This is another one of "those" questions that has most certainly been covered, but I don't remember seeing it. Will I for sure see out of balance rates when there is an injector problem?
Y'all thank yer lucky stars that you are getting all 8 replaced instead of just the ones that are bad, or a misdiagnosis and blaming the injector pump or the return fuel pressure sensor. Because our truck was probably one of the earlier ones to have the injector problems, the local GM techs didn't have a clue what was wrong with it, so they just threw parts at it. It wasn't until the second go around with our injectors that we took it to another dealer who replaced all 8. Ran like it was new after that. We had techs even trying to tell us that a bad injector was the "mains" going out. 100K later they are still there....... the "mains" that is.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif Edited by: TTLS

motovet, balance rates wont show high return flow or fuel leak. they are in indication of some problems, but not the all mighty answer
speedracer 05-24-2004, 08:46 PM So is the Rumor that they changed the design of the Injectors in 03, is that Bogus?
newnamlawn 05-24-2004, 08:55 PM MIne is an 03, i am not sure exactly when it was built though, it was an early 03 model, i will check when i get it back
