: Front End Popping

I have a crisp popping sound that comes from the front end of my truck when I am backing out of the driveway and turning at full lock either way with the steering wheel. It happens all the time. It is just one pop and then everything goes smooth. It is almost like it is setting itself. When I return to center with the steering wheel it does not pop when it returns to center.

Thanks,

Drew

First thing to check is ball joints. Make sure all are lubed. Then tighten front crossmember bolts, the crossmembers can pop when torqued a certain way.

Might also ck the CV's. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif They pop when turning when they get worn. I have had that on a couple of vehicles. ust another thing to ck.

Any luck??

i have been hearing this as well. Only (1) pop as you turn, even if you go back and forth with the wheel still turned.

I always thought it could be the torsion bars. My 6.0 CC 2wd did the same thing. It had 55,000 miles on it till I traded it in for a LLY

My 6.0 did it REAL bad.

My Chevy does it, but it's very slight. I dont even have to move the truck! I go out in the morning, start the truck and after a minute or so it does it

If it does it rolling and turning the wheel, you might check the inner tie rod ends. Undersized and cheesy they wear fast and the ball n socket can pop in and out.

Remove the front crossmember, file (slot) the bolt holes and re-install it. I think there is a Bulletin on this... (Bulletin covers 2003-2005's)

Snap/Popping Type Noise Coming From Front of Vehicle (Remove Front Crossmember and Slot Mounting Holes) #03-08-61-002B - (May 20, 2004)

(Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).)

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Mine did this from the time I drove it off the lot. About 2 weeks after I got it I took it in for service and when I drove home I noticed no more popping. I never went back and asked if they did anything but it hasn't popped since.

Mine had a poping or cracking noise... it ended up being the axle shaft or CV joint that was bad. My truck only had like 2200 miles on it. Anyhow have the axles checked out.

If it does it rolling and turning the wheel, you might check the inner tie rod ends. Undersized and cheesy they wear fast and the ball n socket can pop in and out.
If it is the tie rod ends:

1-can you do them myself ( I have basic hand and air tools)
2- any special tools needed
3- do I get an alignment done after ?

I was told it is a shim that falls out of steering and that there is aq bulletin out on it for replacement.

I still have a single pop noise when braking and turn at slow speed manuvers.

I have r&r the front cross member, but it's still there.

Looking for a solution.

Turning into a parking space and soon as I touch the brakes I hear and feel it. Kinda like hitting a small patch of ice on pavement.
