I am a street rodder whose wife will not run lond distances in the cars so I replaced my 10 year old 350 cu in. Chevy for a Duramax. Man what a wonderful truck. More power than I ever imagined.
Question-- when will the change oil light come on. I have 6,000 miles on it and wonder when I should change the first time. The dealer said light will come on, but did not say when.

reccomend you change now for 1st change. after that go by computer & change when it gets to about 20% this is what i have been told. I now have about 15k & am still new to diesel power. there are a lot of good threads on oil changes only problem is you have a wide variety of opinions, i tend to listen to the old diesel heads who have hundreds of thousands of miles & years experience. Hope this helped

What year is it?
If it's a newer model with steering wheel controls, you can cycle through the "gas pump" button and will find "Oil life remaining xx%"

The ECU is actually pretty smart, and while it does not actually analyze the oil, it bases it's computations on temperature, mileage, engine RPM, etc.... The base computations are based on around 8,000 miles and it either adds or subtracts "points" based on driving style. mine typically reaches 0% around 10k. Since GM programmed the thing assuming we;d be running 15w40 dino and I'm running synthetic, I'm confident with that interval.

But ya... my first change was at 2k, followed by another at 5k.

It is a 2006 with the Allison trans... I do not have the steering wheels controls for the ECU. Just have wait for the light to come on. The dealer says just wait for the light to come on.

Change it now, then to reset the light, press the throttle to the floor, turn the key to "on", then release and depress the pedal 3 times.

It's not going to come on any time soon, and at 6k, you are way overdue for getting the break-in oil out of there.
