Not sure I have a Allison, but this seemed to be the only tranny forum.

I have a 1996 1-ton chevy crew cab 4*4 longbed with a 6.5 diesel and an automatic. All of the sudden (intermitantly) it doesnt seem to shift past third gear. This comes and goes. I can drive 360 miles and be ok, and then to drive to store it bitches at me. Any idea what is going on?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Mike,
Not an Allison probably a 4L80. Best, cheapest, and easiest place to start is a fluid and filter change. Go from there. Good Luck.

Scan it before you do anything.

Thats my thoughts too....

filter and fluid are a good thing, but wont fix a problem that already exists, most it will do is give you opportunity to look in pan for debris. Sounds more electrical to me at first thought.....

I've seen guys condemn transmissions only to find plugged fuel filter...

In your case a SnapOn scanner will suffice.

This happens to my 95 Gmc with 4L80. Most of the time is self fixes it self when you turn it off and let it sit. Mine gets locked in 2nd gear.

I also looked and the tranny fluid looks like it could be changed. Also I got this off the Alyeska Service company (the people that maintain the pipeline) and they are rumored to run an additive in it. Not sure thought.

Regardless, it wouldn't hurt to clean it out.
