My clutch fan sounds like it is locked up when the truck is cool (before operating temp is reached) is this normal or is my clutch going out? Ive heard that the clutch will only lock up with excessive heat through the radiator and not when running cool or normal temps. If it is possibly going out how can I test it and is there a better aftermarket fan and clutch I should replace it with? Thanks

The stock fan clutch may be nearly as much as an aftermarket one, Price the stock from GM and the aftermarket from kennedydiesel.com or other supporters of dieselplace.com. If you've never had overheating, stock clutch will suffice. Some aftermarket units reduce HP draw on engine, perhaps 7, you must decide if the price is worth it.

Was your fan running the last time you shut it down (ie. the day before) and then you start it the next morning?

Ex. Truck running during the day, its hot, fan on and then you park it. Next morning you start it and the fan is on?

Im not sure if the fan was running when I shut down or not. Outside air temp was about 110 so its possible.

I've shut mine down at 60 deg's and had the fan lock in the morning.
My '89 sub with a 454 use to do the exact same thing.
