close the bleed valve and then pump the piston a few more times build up some line pressure..A couple trucks have needed this that I have seen.

I agree...even so, a time or two I have done this and still not gotten a start. I held the peddle (throttle) to the floor then tried again and whamo.

Prob solved:Filled the filter, put it on'no prime pressure'put an air hose in the gas tank, pressurized it,the bleed valve started flowing fuel,I quicklyclosed the valve, started priming the manual pump and it started to harden like ist should..Then the truck fired right up..I was getting scared there for a minute..

Bad idea to pre-fill the filter. Later! Frank

My Censored 2005 Censored Censored Censored Censored is having the same issue, and i am stuck working on the road, so the idea of the airhose up the a$$ trick could work, but no air hose in sight  I will be trying the other trick of holding it to the floor while cranking it, and see what happens, that is, if i can manage to get any fuel up through the lines, i have pumped that damn little fuel button for the past 1-2 hrs off and on it feels like, and no fuel yet... i didnt break the fuel lines, only change the fuel filter....
:help:

if your not getting fuel then you've got a leak somewhere...time to find it. make sure that filter is on there good and seated and all o rings are sittin pretty. you shouldnt need any air hose up the rear type johnson.

JMG343, how can you get a leak from just changing the fuel filter??? new filter & O-rings, snugged on tight... unless the bottom water detector is preventing it, or cracked??? is it possible that having the fuel filter off for about 1/2hr, that it could have drained the entire fuel line, and now the entire system needs re-primed??? taking guesses at the moment before it goes to the shop. (over 5hrs from the house)

Nope...Ive left mine off for a couple hrs. I know you said that the filter is tight and everything, but are you sure that the oring is seated right, and not sticking up a bit and actually not sealing all the way.

I have had to pump some of the trucks with the bleeder closed about 30 strokes then crack the bleeder. If all you get is air repeat the process a couple of times with the bleeder closed until you get fuel. This may work for you as well.

OK, here is the update,I DIDNT do anything wrong !! !! i found this out today, and it will end up costing me $100. it turnsout i have a defective pumping assy that is just about the fuel filter assy. and is covered under the 100k duramax mileage warranty, that has a $100 deductable...

hell, i stumped the 3 mechanics there, they said they would have tried everythingi had done, in the order i did it. so not to bad fro a rookie diesel guy i think !!!

On the road with no compressed air available, you can always use your starter as a compressor...
Rig something to run the exhaust into the fuel tank to provide pressure that way... just have someone standing by ready to yank the hose the moment it actually fires.

I had my truck in the dealer complaining about a bad pump assembly and I got the "cannot duplicate routine". Next time I needed a filter changed I took it to the dealer and let them change it. My dealer has a set of glass windows where you can see the mechanics and low and behold he goes for my fuel door with an air hose. The same way I did it when I couldn't get the sucker to prime. Grabbed the service advisor and told him that's why I brought it to them to change filter and that they just "duplicated my previous problem!". No deductible but I had to pay them for the filter change just so they would recognize the problem. Any how new filter assy. and all is fixed.
