: old or new technology ?

Hi:

I am looking to simplify my life ( my truck is my living - if it isn't running I earn nothing ).

I want to replace my 4.3 gasser and all it's electronic components with a simple physical pump and injector diesel - ( kinda like the perkins in my boat ). Is either of the 6.2 litre of the 6.5 litre talked about so much on this site designed to run with a physical injector and pump ?

What sort of mileage can I expect ? ( it will be going into a half ton body with a five speed manual overdrive tranny that currently gets about 35 mpg ( imperial gallons ) on the highway.

In my situation it will rarely carry more than 600 lbs, ( 4 days per week - up to 75 miles per day ) though it will pull a trailer on a back road ( max of 50 mph ) once per week for about 30 miles each way.

How many things will fit up, how many will have to be adapted ?

cheers

If your getting 35MPG now I'd say leave it alone!!! I'd yank my 6.5 if I could get that for mileage!!! my 6.5 does not even get close to that kind of mileage. the 4.3 is a reliable engine and the electronics don't usually give that much if any grief.
I think I get around 20mpg in the city or about 550KMs to 80-90 liters of fuel. towing my 5th wheel I got 400kms to 70liters of fuel (at speeds ranging from 100-130kph)

Keep the 4.3...I get abot 600km per fill-up 72-75 litres 23-24 MPG imperial...

Thanks for the feedback.

If I do switch I will be putting a diesel in the exact truck the 4.3 came out of - that is with a five speed overdrive manual transmission and whatever rear ratio it came with.

My tach is about 1000 - 1100 at 50 MPH, just shy of 1500 at 60 MPH. I'm sure it is this that is responsible for my mileage more so than the engine itself.

I rarely carry more than 500 - 600 lbs and seldom do much highway driving while making deliveries so I don't need stump pulling power.

want a real diesel? put in a 4bt. The 6.2/6.5 with mechanical pumps are ok but the blocks are inheirantly flawed beyond redemption. The cylinder bores under cut the mains and tend to crack and break.
