: Adjustable Hitch
ZR1160 07-21-2006, 02:21 PM I need to build a Adjustable pullin Hitch, I like DieselPowers, but the local truck shop say the can't get the cast ring anymore, I also looked at Tomacs and it looks easy enough until the ring part. Anyone have any sources or pics of some other concepts. I also thought of building one like tomacs and just using a clevis but I don't want to be at a disadvantage with hitch height.
Blitz636 07-21-2006, 02:47 PM I built this one last weekend. I bought the clevis at Tractor Supply. I had to do a ton of grinding in between the clevis holes inorder to get the two 1/4" plates and the 2"x2" box to fit in between. Pulled with it last night and she held up great.

what parts did you use to make that? was thinking about pulling at some point but didnt know what a hitch had to be made of or how it had to be constructed.
heartbeatcanada 07-21-2006, 02:57 PM Go to a utility trailer manufacture or a tsc store or princess auto store and they will all have rings for you, if there the same store as we have here. I use a pintle ring thats suppose to be on the trailer, bolt it to the draw bar with a flat plate attached(all 1 piece) with matching holes, and then its adjustable to different heights for different rules. Probably got 50- 75 hooks on it and its held up perfect.

The majority of it was built using 2"x2"x1/4"wall cold formed tubing. I bought the clevis at Tractor Supply (family farm supply store). The clevis had a 3 1/2" through hole and 2 1/4" between the pin holes. I had to grind off an 1/8" off each side in order to fit two 1/4" plates and the box tubing between them. Took me like an hour and two grinding wheels to grind the clevis. Censored think was hard as Censored . Used 1" bolts above and below the clevis to match the 1" holes needed for the clevis pin.
Hope that helps.
I think Tomac's got a better design though.

Man o Man did you put so work into that!:cool2: I kinda feel lazy after see that. You got skills and patientence that I don't have, but I like the stoutness of your hitch:grd:
dmaxlover 07-21-2006, 06:13 PM The hitch on the right in the 1st pic is what Heartbeat is referring to. I made a new one this year that is only about a 1/3 of the weight, but you won't be able to make the ring.
JoshH 07-21-2006, 07:20 PM WTF is the story with that huge ball? That thing is ginormous!
dmaxlover 07-21-2006, 07:32 PM Me and a guy at work were bored and we said " you know what would be cool, a 6" diameter trailer ball. Can you image the look on peoples faces when they see that thing on the back of my truck. There going to be like, WTF is that guy towing?"
So that's the story. We bought some material, and started chipping away.
White Duramax 07-21-2006, 08:21 PM I used a piece of 1.25" thick steel and cut a 3.5" diameter hole with a torch. Welded the ring to a flat 1/2" plate with 4 holes in it. It then bolts to another plate with about 8 sets of holes for height adjustment. And a piece of solid 2x2 welded onto the back.

dmaxlover 07-29-2006, 01:16 PM Yes, any of them will work. Watch out for the id diameter. Some organizations require a 3" id.

You got big ball!
AlligatorPerformance 08-18-2006, 11:26 PM I guess you could say he is a "Big Baller"?:pimp:
Dmax Tim 08-19-2006, 06:39 PM I'd use solid 2X2 bar, Raymond can tell u what happens w/ tubing.
all joints need to go through the plate and weld both sides.
A lot easier to do it right the first time than have to redo it at the track.
Ben46a 08-20-2006, 08:11 PM Steve did you look at any of the hitches in antigonish this weekend? they are about the best setup, adjustable by the inch for 10 inches. Ill see if i have any pictures, Also, there is another pull september 8th in Pictou, its all "stock" pickups and highway tractors if your interested. They have hitches you can borrow.

Interested in making me a hitch?

Ya sorry I had to leave, I want to stay, but had to go. Next time i be sure I can stay longer.
JoshH 09-03-2006, 12:10 AM I just built one tonight. What do you think? It's made out of 3/8" plate, the bolts are 1/2" grade 8, adjustable in 1" increments and the ring is a 3" i.d.

nwpadmax 09-03-2006, 01:18 AM If the weld between the plate and bar is full penetration, you should be OK for a while. My gut is that 3/8" plate might too thin. Mine is 3/4". Check it after a couple pulls and if you see bending, go thicker.
Your stock hitch will probably take some abuse. They're not very strong IMHO.
JoshH 09-03-2006, 01:27 AM 3/4" I had access to 1", but I didn't want to go overboard. I had the welder turned up pretty hot and put a bevel on the gussets to the plate. I cut a square hole and put a bevel on the plate and the 2" square stock. Hopefully it will hold up. I'll keep an eye on it. If the stock reciever looks like it is taking some abuse I'll upgrade it, but I'm not running lots of power so hopefully it will be okay.
Thanks for the input.

The gussets will add a lot of strength to it. I think it should hold for a lot of hooks, as long as the weld are good.
