Hey guys sorry I haven't been around for much of the great converstations going on here, I periodically check out a few threads but summertime is my busy time and the time I spend at my desk is doing paperwork. Anyways,

In the mornings or after letting the truck sit for 4-5 hrs or so, not all the time but sometimes it's an act of god to get to start, sometimes comes down to a half shot of ether because I don't have time to mess with it!@ Anyway, the times it doesn't do it the glow plugs will cycle longer, the times it won't start it is on for a moment or two but not on for the say 10seconds it's on when it does start. I'm guessing the glowplug controller, at first I was blaming the PMD but the more i thought about it and then noticing the glow times, leaning more towards the controller. Not having any of the other PMD symptoms. Looking for opinions and knowledge on the problem. Thanks in advance!

Here's some possibilities:

Battery connections require cleaning/tightening
Cables require replacement
Dead cell in battery

new batteries this past winter, twin 1000CCA, cables and all are all sound, new terminals when batteries where put in and the spacer was eliminated. Plenty of cranking power, turns over fast without bogging down. So don't think it's power, thanks for the input!

Read this thread for another possibility.

Varied glow times could be an indicator of possible coolant temperature sensor problem... or bad connection on the sensor maybe too. Glow times are not "fixed" on size fits all, but are longer/shorter depending upon engine temp. Glow plug controller may throw a code, whereas the coolant temperature sensor may be just enough out of whack to not code, but just give faulty reading to the ECM.

BTW, the gauge is a different sensor that what the ECM looks at.

Could this be an air in fuel issue also? We didn't get much info about the symptoms, just started assuming other things.
