Good reason to remove power boxes before service.

My friends at my Blue Oval dealership told me, even if you unplug the 'box' they still can find out if one was installed.

Just got off the phone with a buddy of mine that is going through this same thing with f**d. He hired a lawyer and everything. They have to prove the box caused it and they will not even hook it up to computer to find out. They have been fighting this out for a few months now, so we shall see what happens. Hopefully he will get it all worked out.

Actually something similar happened to me but it was with a lift kit and steering components. They tried to tell that the kit and the angle caused it and I knew they were wrong. The kit had a steering drop down and the angle after the install was less restrictive on the steering than before. Hired a lawyer, they fixed it before he even called them. Worked out well...

I agree http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

but dont think GM wont toss your warranty in the trash in the same situation!

Heck, at least Ford isn't all anal about frickin' tire size!

I lost the entire warranty on my SS Camaro. It had no visual evidence of modifications, and I only took it in for an air bag light (read nothing related to performance). GM will void your warranty in a heart beat. They know we can't afford to sue.

Amric,

How did they know to void the warranty? No visual evidence? Sounds like you could have won the lottery with a good lawyer! (read, no justification?)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I had pulled the motor the first month I owned the SS. I replaced the cam, valves, springs, retainers, rockers, pushrods. Both the heads and intake were stock on the outside, but flow bench ported on the inside. Stock 48mm throttle body bored out to 52mm. Every mod was designed by John Lingenfelter, and installed by me. The motor looked stock on the outside, but made 425hp and sounded incredible.

I think they suspected it was modified as soon as they heard it idle, and a quick test drive, and they were 90% sure. They actually went to the trouble of pulling a valve cover to look for aftermarket parts, and sure enough they saw the crower roller rockers. I told them they had no right to pull my valve covers when I only brought it in for a air bag sensor failure. They agreed, but said their regional guy made them do it. They voided the ENTIRE warranty. Ever since then, I have just assumed that any vehicle I buy comes without a warranty, because I just can't help but modify everything I get my hands on.

So here is a good question.

With a 100,000 mile Duramax warranty, but only a 36,000 mile Allison warranty, what would they do if you were over 36,000 miles and they saw a Suncoast or ATS transmission installed. I wonder if they would try to void the Duramax warranty stating that no one would put a Suncoast or ATS behind a stock motor.

I sometimes wonder the same thing about something as simple as EGT and Boost guages.

I think you could effectively argue the "need" for a "trans upgrade" due to failure in "normal towing" just after warranty went out. If this happened to someone who liked the truck and the trans made it just out of warranty (as happens), and an upgrade rebuild was about the same price or cheaper as a component replacement, how could they make that argument? They might try, like many other pathetic "any excuse to void the warranty", but a lawyer would easily make a fool of them in court...

Likewise about pulling the valve cover. I hate lawyers and they way we have turned into a litigious society, but sometimes that is the *right* solution… Especially when dealing with the majority of dealerships which are the only business I know of that runs on that forced barter, outright lies expected, and cut-throat business model...

How do those aftermarket warranties play into this? Couldn't a guy just buy one of those and be done with it? It's not GM's dollar then, so why would they care?

Gm won't, but a friend of mine had an aftermarket warranty on his car and the tranny went out. The arguement was they were not responsible, and was not covered. He persisted and they said the only way they will cover the cost is if the tranny is completely torn down and inspected and it was determined to be a covered failure. If the tear down does not show the covered failure he will stand the cost of the tear down. He stuck to his guns and force the tear down. They finally covered the whole thing. But he did not have the car for three weeks and it was 400 miles from home. I might also mention that the tear down was a Ford dealership and the warranty inspector had to monitor every move the tech made. The aftermarket warrenties are probably worse that the GM warrenty.
