What range of EGT are you guys, with gauges, getting while towing any kind of load. I'm particulary interested in what is produced while driving up the long grades going through mountains where a driver would have his foot into it to maintain speed. Edited by: motocopter

Trying to maintain 70 pulling 10,000 lbs I can easily get it up to 1200-1300 degrees before having to back it down to get the temps under 1100-1200. I find it amazing what easing up on the throttle and slowing down to 65 will do to the temps. And how are the guys without EGT gages not cooking these things??

I try to keep mine under 1200* and it seems pretty easy most of the time. The highest EGT I have had while towing has been 1321* but for the most part it stays under 1000* When it starts to climb just force a down shift and or let up on the go fast peddle.

My truck is completely stock all the way down to the factory paper air filter. I do however have gauges as I wanted to monitor the factory conditions before I start modifying.

I usually tow a 36ft 5th wheel (10k# empty, 15k# w/ Jeep) or a 32ft gooseneck flatbed w/ 2 Jeeps (13k#). My truck will maintain the speed limit for the most part but sometimes gets sucked down to around 55mph on Vail and Loveland passes on I-70 thru Colorado. I keep the pedal mashed going up the "hills" and the truck peaked at 1300* several times but usually runs around 1250* on the long grades. On flat ground cruising at 75mph it runs 900-950*.

None of you have said that you have a "pre" or "post" turbo install for the sender.

I have a "post" installattion. And if I remember, Kennedy said that there is a big difference between the two. Somewhere in the 3 or 400 deg range.

If pre is 1300, then post would/could/should be 1000. However, I tow a 35ft 5th wheel at 12K, and going up a hill with it to the metal it will get up to 11 - 1200 easily. It makes me very uncomfortable and I will usually back off a little.

Highway with the 5th is usually around 8 - 900.

Not towing it runs at about 5 - 600.

So far I find the postings of "BGMAX" and "kbstinky" really interesting as this is a classic apples and oranges comparison - if I may. One truck is 100% stock with higher EGTs and the other with a mod or two but most notable is the 4" exhaust. Seams all of these trucks ought to come with the larger exhaust pipes and less back-pressure.

My daily driver at work produces 4750 horsepower at transmission limited 100% torque with the engine temp (power turbine inlet temp) of 940*C. Not sure what the exhaust temperature really is other than very hot. Could fry a whole carton of eggs there. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gifEdited by: motocopter

I tow with a VA Smart box on the 90 hp setting all the time. Goes up any hill at 60 in 4th direct in cruise at 850-950. Has never gone higher unless I was in OD them maybe it will reach 1200 but it usually downshifts before that. My trailer weighs 14000 lbs.

It really doesn't seem to matter what mods the truck does or does not have when pulling 3 to 5 miles of 6 %. Somewhere before the top the pre-turbo EGT is going to go past 1250 into the red. I run my Juice on the 60 HP setting. When it hits 1250 I take the cruise off and force a down shift. Usually I can still run at 65-68. Later! Frank

PS: I have never needed to put the peddle on the floor on any hill. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
