: FS2500 Oil Filter
Lugnut 07-19-2006, 09:37 PM Purchased 06 Dually LBZ model this past Feb. I currently have over 52,000 miles on the truck and by years end should have at least 70,000 on the truck. All that I lack in having the truck tricked out is an exhaust system. Any suggestions? Also, I read an advertisement in the August issue of Diesel Power magazine suggesting the purchase of a FS2500 Bypass oil filter. It claims to filter the oil down to 3 microns. Does anyone have this system on their truck(s). If so, what do you think of it.
The Neens 07-19-2006, 10:35 PM I've recently installed one on a '02 and a '05. The install was simple and the braided line kit Jim offers is inexpensive and works great. I only have 3000-4000 miles on each engine since installing and haven't changed filters yet, but the oil already looks a lot cleaner. The machine work on the filter assembly is excellent.
TurboIndian 07-20-2006, 09:21 PM I purchased 1 for my big truck. I have about 9k on it now, about 1k more then send off an oil sample. I can not justify the $400 to put it on the Dmax becuse it does not hold that much oil. it's to cheap to change the oil every 4-5k. I figure it would take over 300k to pay for its' self. block the EGR & just change the oil.
Lugnut 07-21-2006, 07:28 PM What you say makes a lot of sence. Changing the oil every 5,000 is certainly an option. I was thinking about using synthetic oil. What is your thoughts on that. I would still change the oil every 5,000 miles. Since I am new to the diesel world, your suggestions are noteworthy. What is the function of EGR other than the obvious and what part does it play in clean oil? Thanks,
TurboIndian 07-21-2006, 09:23 PM as for the synthetic oil, I personally don't use it in my engine. all my diesels have had Shell Rotella 15-40 run through them & I have NEVER had an engine failure, so why would I change my habits. the mechanic that works on my Western Star has been turning wrenches on diesels for 40+years he told me that even with synthetic it should be changed about the same as dino oil, & the reason it the oil gets dirty, soot, dust, ect. now I must admit I went against my ways & I am using Mobil Delvac in the Dmax, I don't know why but I figured I would give it a try. the EGR put more soot into the oil. these are ONLY my findings. there are several folks on the board using synthetic oil & bypass oil filters & doing oil analysis. I personally can not justify it. as I stated before I did put the FS2500 on the Star, but it hold 9 gallons of oil, it was getting changed every 10k (with Rotella) it costs me over $115 to change the oil in that truck, every 1 1/2 months. the FS2500 will pay for its self in just over 1 year.;)
PS; I do use synthetic in the race car.
ALREMC 07-22-2006, 01:31 AM Lugnut, as you, I also new to the diesel world and I had the dealer do the first oil change at 3k. I did the second at 8k and went syn. I have always used syn on my gas trucks and have had no problems at all (knock, knock). so I decided to use the Rottella Syn from Wally World. I did notice though that i was having ahard time seeing the oil on the dip stick as I was filling the oil but once i started the eng, the oil turned dark again. must have been residual. I thought about the bypass also but am holding off. I would drive myself crazy knowing I had not changed the oil in 10k!!!
pscarollo 07-22-2006, 02:59 AM I have the bypass filtration.
While I can only report from a visual inspection, as I have not ordered an oil analysis and doubt I ever will, the oil stays "cleaner" longer or at least it appears that way. The oil turned dark very quickly without the bypass filtration and now it appears cleaner to the eye even after a couple of thousand miles.
I doubt if the puchase money for the FS 2500 can be logically justified if you block the EGR, change oil frequently, and drive under 20,000 miles p/year. After all, the engine is likely to outlast everything around it whether or not you have the bypass filtration or fail to change oil frequently.
Nonetheless, the bypass filtration made sense to me in that I'm old school and clean oil, at least imho, remains the life blood of our trucks.
