: Bed making sheet metal popping noises
chuntag95 05-18-2004, 10:58 AM I hauled a couple of loads of retaining wall bricks this weekend. Each pallet was around 2500 pounds. Now I am hearing popping noises from the bed when I have weight transfer like coming to a stop. It sounds like when you push on a panel and it pops back. The wife even noticed it. I looked at the supports and the springs and didn't see anything obvious. There were no signs of any damage to the bed. The truck did sink about 4 inches, but other than that, no ill effects when hauling. Anyone got any ideas or had this problem? The noise is going to drive me nuts until I find it. Turfmower 05-18-2004, 07:32 PM I do that 5 to 10 times a week get used to the noise. All trucks make noise. Unless they are pretty boy trucks that never worked. It made to work. Load it up it quiets down. If you want some thing quiet buy a car.
woodsracer 05-19-2004, 09:47 AM The dodge dakota I had (and sold) just prior to my 2500hd last month was doing that. It seem to have started a few months back one afternoon when I was messing around in the snow packed roads and side streets in four wheel drive. That day there was alot of popping noises like you describe, and I thought I busted something loose. I even thought, maybe it was the cold weather causing something to expand and contract, because as the weather got warmer and into spring the sound all but vanished. I always noticed the noise when driving very slow, usually coming to a stop or starting out, not while driving down the road. I thought maybe a motor mount? I never could figure it out, everything underneath looked fine and seemed to be tight. Anyway, I gave up trying to figure it out and then it got sold.
chuntag95 05-19-2004, 11:14 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif I think I found it last night. My wife put a can of Off in my bed on Sunday after she sprayed the kids. It was rolling around and hitting the sides. I went to unload some bags of dirt and found it. I almost hate admitting it, but I had no idea she had done it. I asked her why she didn't think about that when she heard the noise and made a comment. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif No noise on the drive in this morning. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
If I wanted quiet, I wouldn't have put on a new exhaust http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif. My concern was I popped something loose or broke something. It was more of a safety issue/concern than anything. I had a noise like that on a furd once and the bolt holding the rear spring was almost completely out. It would have been a bad deal if it had let go. I do like to keep the noises in the "known" catagory. As long as I know what it is, it doesn't really bother me. An old grumpy Japanese guy tought me to listen to my equipment and know all the sounds. He was amazing at finding problems by just hearing something was wrong. I now apply that to everything, especially my vehicles. Works pretty good too. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

terel 05-20-2004, 05:27 PM Turf,
Whether you intend it or not, your responses here and elsewhere can sound sarcastic and jaded at times. Folks use this site to collaborate with fellow dura/ali enthusiasts. As stated in another thread, some of us view our trucks merely as tools--simply things to work with. Others take pride in their truck, enjoy doing modifications/maintenance, and keeping it looking right. Just because you can't identify with this, there's no need to pooh-pooh those who do. Just a humble observation; not trying to make enemies.
Take care,
Terel

aketay 05-20-2004, 10:46 PM I personally thought Turfmowers comment reflected my opinion. 34K miles and my bed creeks, hitches rattle and the rear springs slap over medium to large bumps. Thanks GM for the loud stereo, I use it all the time. Other than that I would worry to much about the working sounds....
terel 05-21-2004, 12:13 AM Was I out of line? Sorry if so.
Sometimes it just feels like you're out to persuade people to trash on their trucks, stop putting money into them, and use them for work. Just not everyone's way...

ROBZUK 05-21-2004, 08:25 PM Terel,
You weren't out of line at all. I'm still pi$$ed that you called me a liar about the 4 yards of mulch.
ROB An insensitive and at times ill mannered MICK from the East Coast
Turfmower 05-21-2004, 08:48 PM ROBZUK,
You can't fit 4 yards of mulch in a pickup unless it has side.
I can put 5 in my Mason dump with sides or 8 yard in my truck with the 12' foot grain body
terel 05-22-2004, 01:20 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Rob--okay, you made me laugh! Unfotunately, I wasn't the one who questioned you about your bed capacity--although I did read that post!
Hope you're well.
~Terel
P.S. What's a "MICK"?
