: DIY Injector Replacement
KT7307 05-17-2004, 12:28 PM I have the injectors ordered from dealer (2) four packs. It's been five years since I was wrenching for a living and I have been luckey enough to put the tools away and have my stuff fixed else where. BUT...This is a job I feel I must do. I would very much like some advice from you pros out there. What are the pit falls? Special Tools? What should I not do? Most importantly where do I get the RR proceedures? THX in Advance Kevin...
hasselbach 05-17-2004, 12:54 PM I have the service manual and its pretty detailed in instructions. I'd opt to pick one up at the dealership. They ain't cheap though, I think I paid over a hundred for it (actually you get 6 volumes)
KT7307 05-17-2004, 04:11 PM OK, Three hours and I'm down to the injectors....so far so good! What evil serpents lie ahead? KT
OC_DMAX 05-17-2004, 11:10 PM I'd make sure you talk with one of the Techs on the forum. Dmaxallitech and Patrick come to mind. There has to be a number of little tricks these guys have learned over the years. Try PM'ing them. Also, pay particular attention to the torque spec's for the high pressure fittings (both supply and return). Edited by: OC_DMAX
patrick 05-18-2004, 12:33 AM you will need an injector puller and also be sure not to pull the injector sleeves with them if so they will need new seals.be sure to replace all the fuel fittings seals. look like little black washers.the job is all wrenching other than torque specs.I have many extra parts for the job and an extra puller if you need one pm me and we will talk.I am in Oregon. dmaxallitech may have stuff to be distance my be the deal.so let us know.why are you replacing them? I also have some of the "banjo Bolts" and Junction block relief valves.
the lower valve cover is kind of a trick on the driver side.any questions let me know. Patrick
dmaxalliTech 05-18-2004, 08:59 AM tricks per say are hard to describe, just do things and I dont think about it anymore.. 4 hours open hood to shut hood on the last set..

Wow!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Are you flat rate? I think they pay 8 hrs now. I'm not telling you how long I took,http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif but I've only done 2.
Horse Trainer 05-18-2004, 01:02 PM Perfect practice makes perfect!!!!!!!!
hasselbach 05-18-2004, 01:11 PM maybe he can do it in 4 hours, but then again, why does he have all those extra bolts and nuts afterward?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
dmaxalliTech 05-18-2004, 02:00 PM why does he have all those extra bolts and nuts afterward?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Judgin by your avetar, you will appreciate it.....
Less weight when your drag racinhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
Sid, flat rate? You bet, wouldnt change it for the world. 4 hours is bustin major arse, I think I had about 6 into JK's truck, but we had to "kill a few soldiers" along the way. That, and we resealed injector tubes and did some fuel filter head mods as well....I have a truck outside with fuel in oil.... I wonder if I can shave some time off that 4 hours......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I never thought of the weight issue, great idea. Question, how much can I save by eliminating the Nut behind the wheel?
dmaxalliTech 05-18-2004, 04:38 PM In my case, about 270lbs
BIG DIPPER 05-18-2004, 04:56 PM In my case, about 270lbs
....no wonder that Polaris kept getting stuck....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

BIG DIPPER
If you look at those pictures carefully. Eric didn't get stuck, he sunk to the bottom, and the Polaris was not the culprit.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
gwmayes 05-18-2004, 11:54 PM One slick trick is to remove front wheels and set ball joints down on a couple of 2x4s. Makes it a lot easier to reach over the sides. Saw that in a picture of Eric doing an injector job.
Also, I'd be inclined to replace those fuel lines connected to the injectors if they are as full of crap as I've seen in pictures on this forum.
What's an 8-pack of those puppies cost these days? Any aftermarket?
dmaxalliTech 05-19-2004, 12:29 AM I knew that would stir up the 'boys'....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

gwmayes, those lines are about 60-80 each. so you can get alot of money in a hurry on them
patrick 05-20-2004, 12:15 AM good times Erick I think i am around 4 hrs.now is this just injectors or sleeves as well.It stinks they moved the rate dowm with the new bulliten was it not like 12.0 hrs or something and what are you charging for customer
time. we have no book in the shop for the d/max. do you have flag sheets.if so we should have a test no no I cot it lets get together I the next year if $ and health allow and get a couple of guys fromt the diesel place together who need injectors and have a "pull" off. winer get stake dinner all the fixins. and we could double it
by adding injection pump in. no its good to hear that your doing well and yes the more we do these the easer it is. I dont see a lot of d/max maybe 2-5 a week not all for injectors.so any way it cool. Patrick
patrick 05-20-2004, 12:17 AM dmaxallitech at the same time we can do one job and take turns recording and giving insite. make a dvd and sell it. would be better than the gm training dvd.

A "How-to Change Injector" DVD is great idea! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif I'll buy one ... When can I place and order? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
Seriously, I think as more trucks go out of warranty many of us will be doing our own injector changes..
http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
dmaxalliTech 05-20-2004, 11:45 AM u know pat, I was thinking we just load up our tools in a trailer, start on the east coast and go around working on these.....
Actually, I have thought of putting togather a DVD on injector job.. Would have to price it to make it worth it, but would be cheaper then paying to have them replaced.....
You might beat me on the race to replace.... I am slowing down in my old age.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
KT7307 05-20-2004, 02:54 PM Thx for the replies.....I finished b4 I checked the thread for answers.
Job went super smooth and I had no problems pulling the injectors or fuel line "gunk". Six Hrs start to finish...I guess 20 years of wrenching was good for something.
Most importantly...It runs great and the ****thing is QUIET!!!!!!
Cost about $2000.00 in parts...Kevin
dmaxalliTech 05-20-2004, 10:57 PM Glad ya got here wrapped up

I'm impressed KT! If I need them on mine when it's out of warranty, I'll bring it by for you to work on while I take one of your boats fishing! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
KT7307 05-24-2004, 08:54 AM SRode, You mean you would trust me to work on a GM product you own? I'm flattered! KT
srode 05-25-2004, 07:03 PM Truck yes, camaros no.... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
