I have an 05 2500 hd lly and have finally gotten around to trying to spice it up a little. I have some friends around that have the lb7 motors and are running bullydog power pups with insane amounts of horsepower. One has stacked boxes and upgraded his tranny and blows away cobras, while another just has the +150 setting on the power pup. They have told me that the 05 allisons will actually revert to stock everytime u shift if ur running high horsepower and thus make the truck slower than the lb7's. Is this true? I was also trying to decide on a downloader to go with. I like the power pups that I have seen and what they do to trucks, but have seen that several people are using the edge modules. I'm really wanting to get that black smoke going and be able to have a much faster truck, but I don't want something that will stand a good chance of damaging my truck. Thanks in advance.

I dunno. There are probably just as many 12 second LLY's running around now as LB7's.

You need to beef up the trans if you want to run with the big dogs. Then, you can get more HP out of an LLY than a stock Viper puts out.

But... It is not for the meek. Yes you can hurt your truck running more HP through it. Be it 10hp or 250hp gain, as the power goes up so does the risk.

If you just want to have a little fun and not worry about it, go with about a 65rwhp tune. This will drop more than a second off your ET.

PS - I've run most the LLY tuners including the Power Pup. It isn't even in the 5 top choices. Pretty close to the bottom of the list. The most powerful handheld is made by Pacific Performance.

From the Allison website:

The TCM uses 'Shift Energy Management' (SEM). During most range shifts, there is more power available than necessary to maintain acceleration. The unused engine power traditionally goes into slipping clutches, and results in additional heat without adding to vehicle performance. Through engine/transmission communication, SEM is the electronic control process that reduces torque during range upshifts to a level resulting in consistent transmission output torque before and after the shift. The net result is optimized shift quality as well as reduced clutch energy.

This function is commonly known as "defueling." Tuners provide additional fuel by increasing the fuel injection pressure or increasing the fuel injection pulse width. Some tuners provide additional defueling at shifts and / or when transmission slippage is detected.

Briano provides an excellent tuner summary here:

and a tuner poll here:

Two of the most popular tuners are the Edge Juice or EZ or the Predator 2.02. Both these tuners have power settings appropriate for a stock transmission.

There's alot to become familiar with; intake systems, exhaust systems, tuners, boost stick, etc. Happy reading! :)

If you aren't going to do your trans, both the Edge EZ and Predator are very good choices. Low cost, good manners. But even they can slip a transmission if you beat on it alot in the top setting. Stick to the middle settings. The Edge w/Attitude is very popular and is easy to use and install. It comes with gauges and "shift on the fly" power levels. But if you need to read and reset codes, and remove the 98mph speed limiter, or adjust speedo for bigger tires, the Predator is what you need.

I sell PPE tuners and help with their development. While they do have lower power settings that are safe on a stock trans, and read/reset codes/remove limiter/tire adjust, you will absolutely limp your trans when you use the hot settings. If temptation overcomes you, you will overcome your trans.

I also sell EFILive which is a custom tuning system and datalogger. It's state of the art. Nothing better. Perhaps not a good "first tuner" if you are not a gearhead though. I include a custom tune for free with them to get you started. It reads and resets codes as well as records engine functions, so it's a cool tool even if you don't make your own tunes. But say you start out with a 65HP tune at first, then later get your trans built, you can load in some REALLY mean tunes. 500rwhp or better. Then if you get injectors, bigger turbo, modified fuel pump, you can adjust the program to suit your mods.

It also does GM gasoline vehicles to boot.

hmm so u guys do not recommend the power pup then? to be honest i didn't even know about all these other downloaders until i came to this website. i live in kentucky and everyone around here is all about bullydog and nothing else. i know some guys that are running anywhere from 100-150hp over stock with stock transmissions without any problems although they don't run them this hard all the time. they just get out and race every once in a while and show their *** and run them lower the rest of the time. thats really wat i'm questing after. i want something to get out with the guys and show a tad, but then be able to jack it down and have a good dependable truck that i can haul with.

Hmm, McRat may like my suggestion then as it may be what will best suit your needs. I have a Van Aaken Smartbox LLY for sale with a 3 positon switchable on the fly switch for either stock, +70 HP or +180 HP positons. Got it in the for sale section if interested. I want $300 in my pocket for it so $310 delivered takes it. I'll give you a link to the thread. Read and ask around. If interested let me know. :)
