I am thinking about getting a Dmax in a while and one of the things that is stopping me is what it sounds like with a 4 or 5" straight pipe or good muffler. Does anybody think that someone will come out with bigger exhaust selection in a few years. My friend has a complete 5" system on his 02 Cummins with a 4" down pipe and I would want something like that maybe. I'm not sure if I could go back to a single pipe since I have 5" dual tips on my 5.7 Z71. Yeah two 28 1/2 long 5" tips. Deep rumblehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Does it get deeper the bigger you go on the Dmax? I want deepness and not farting Powerstroke sound

If you want a Cummins sound, You have one choice! Buy a Cummins.

Take a listen to an 03 or 04 Cummins! The sound of the old Cummins is gone. And I couldn`t be more happy. There is at least 10 different exhaust options for the Duramax, and not one of them will make it sound anything like a Cummins. Sorry!

exhaust sound is like women. We all have a different preference and I won't even begin to tell you why mine is best. I happened to be going golfing this morning and I was running about 105 mph and do you know what I heard? Nothing. Radio playing, talking and laughing with the guys in the back seat. What I did hear was those poor big blocks with headers and their stupid flowmaster mufflers that get their butts kicked everytime their truck sees a hill. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I don't want a Cummins Drone, I don't like that and I would never buy one.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif I want Chevy all the time, I have to listen to my neighbors 00 Cummins with 6" stacks everyday. That's one reason why I want to get a Duramax. I just wanted some reassurance about a few of my questions and Can you have the Dmax have a more deep tone to it. Mentioning again I will not get a Cummins, engine is the loudest diesel pickup. I come home late sometimes, I don't want to wake up the whole neighborhood.

Adam,

Exhaust preference is in the hands of the person who owns the truck. You can make a Duramax sound as loud or quiet as you want it to. Just like your 5.7L... They can be very quiet or very loud depending on what system you put on it.

Yeah youve heard my truck and know it's very loud, I'm sure the Duramax even with a 5" exhaust on it wouldn't be as loud as my truck is. I'm sure they'll have some 4" downpipes and big pipes by the time I get mine

When I play, I mark my golf balls with a happy face. That way when I lose them in the rough, I can take comfort that someone will eventually find them. And when they do, they will be in a bad mood .....kinda goes along with the whole searching for your ball in the rough thing. Well...when they see that little happy face smiling back up at them........................they'll wonder what kind of an idiot would use a happy face as mark. And hopefully crack a smile themselves. You know it will at least be a topic of conversation in the cart or the clubhouse.

What was the topic again.....oh yeah exhaust sounds. On a DMAX with 5" vs your big block, remember that the turbo on a DMAX does quiet down the note some even before it gets to the muffler.

Why doesnt it quiet it down on a Cummins or Powerstroke or does it? I'm saying comparing the deepness to a 24v with a straight pipe on it. Same pipes is the Damx as deep as a Cummins and or can you make it as deep.

If you listen to a naturally aspirated, straight piped Ford 7.3 or Chevy 6.2 diesel, they are way louder (and horrible sounding) than any turbo diesel.

I know that the 4" exhaust systems give the duramax a deeper sounding exhaust note than a straight piped 3.5". I imagine a 5" would be deeper yet.

I like the sound of the Banks system the best. Nice tone, but not too loud. Perfect for me.

I have a clip of my truck with a kennedy 4"-5" exhaust with the muffler removed. I persoanlly love the sound. It is pretty quiet at idel and cruising(barely hear it with the radio off at 70mph on the highway) but it does really wake up when you get on it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

My exhaust sounds sweet IMO but everybody has different tastes. It will draw attention to you depending how you are with the stupid pedal. It will also set off all kinds a car alarms.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

The vids are between 5-30MB range.

Its pretty deep too......

The Kennedy exhaust was the same with the muffler just a bit more quiet.

Can you post the clip for me? How far does the 5" run? Is it 4" with 5" tip. They'll have downpipes out in a while and more selection, I'd put 5" all the back with a 6" tip or go wild if there was room and have dual 5".

The muffler reduces it up. Its a 4" inlet with a 5" outlet. I bet you could roll a cantalope through ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif So its 5" from the begining of the bed back.

4" is plenty big unless you are getting really nutty powerwise.

Can we post clips here if we dont have a host? I dont know if I want vids of my stupidity on the net though ;) http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif Poor poor tireshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

They are in the 5-30MB range I think. The pretty good one of it is around 19sec long....

Z71 Grizzly,

If you want a sound without resonance the 5 inchers are probably not what you want to get, we sell lots of them but they are louder and will make more of a potential resonance etc. We are a MBRP distributor and have 4 inch system available in aluminized, t-409 and T-304 stainless. The sound is a deep rumbel and is well liked by Duramax owners. The stainless systems are available in single or duals as well. The 304 systems come standard with 5 inch dual wall tips that are optional on the 409 systems. Please call us if you have any questions or need and help.

For a very low price, the Summit Racing exhaust can`t be beat. I have the Banks and like it a lot, but wish t was louder. I am thinking either Victory red or Blueox03 had the Summit system.

I would really like the 5" dual system from MBRP. But at well over a grand it is out of the question.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Even the lower price of the 409 duals it is too much after having $650 already wrapped up in the exhaust.Edited by: hdmax

JMO but resoanance is muffler related or were you are dumping your exhaust and has nothing to do with pipe size. I've had a few vehicals that resoance changed or went away with a muffler change. The kennedy exhaust lost resonance up to 2500 rpm with the removal of the muffler. It didnt resoanate bad before but now its actually quiter on the highway at a 70mph cruise.

Look at the posts.....some guys complain of resonance with certian brands but others dont.

I'm not looking for exhaust yet because I don't have a Duramax beast yet. I'm just getting info on the truck and what it sounds like. I haven't heard to many since all I hear everyday is Cummins. I just wanna know if they fart down the road like Powerstrokes and if you can change that. I don't like high pitched exhaust, My Z71 has a deep roar to it.Also the ricers with the coffee can mufflers too. None of that, just pure rumbling power!
