I also posted this in ask the tech but figured that some people probably don't go there often (like myself)

Hey guys, My 03 Dmax that has 62k on the OD acted kinda funny today....well kinda is not the word for it. REALLY funny is better.

As I was entering the highway the dang thing would not shift out of 2nd and I noticed that the little light that underlines the gear on the selector was missing. I would show up again in R,3 and 1 but not in N, D or 2.

I pulled over and shut the rig off. Let it sit for a minute while I checked the fluid and inspected for anything gushing fluid. Nothing.

Pulled back onto the highway and all was good to go.

Stopped at the grocery store for about 35 minutes, when I came out and fired up the Dmax and put it in gear it went into Reverse fine, but when I selected drive the driveline slammed HARD into gear.

Again I inspected and nothing. I drove it 3 blocks home to my house with no trouble until I parked it. with the wife shifting I crawled underneath and it lookes like something is loading and unloading really hard inside the tranny.

I mean this is WAY more than just your normal driveline clunk from all the lash of the gears being taken up, it litterally shakes the rig pretty good.

Any experience would be nice. I am taking it into the dealer tomarrow but they are 30 miles away. Safe to drive?

Oh and the 100k warrenty covers the tranny right? I bought my rig in Canada so the normal dealer type warrenty didn't come with it...I don't think

Tranny warranty is 3/36, only the engine is 5/100...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Sounds like you might have an NSBU switch problem...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Check the electrical plugs on it first to make sure they're seated, but if it's the black switch with two plugs on it, it's suspect particularly if it's been exposed to water.

I had this problem. I believe it was a switch located on the side of the tranny, I can not remember.

i think this is what the two guys before me are speaking of or at least similar. on my dads old 93 p-stroke he had overdrive selector on/off at the end of the shifter(similar to d-max lockout) and the switch/sensor in the shifter i believe would go bonkers....and the on/off on the shifter would flash....when it would go, you dreaded getting up to over 45 beacsue you were gonna get rocked when it went to shift....both times it did this he put several hundred miles on it before it got to the shop....and the tranny last well over 200k.
if i were you i wouldnt worry bout driving it to the dealer, when you know its about to shift, maybe left off so it wont be so harsh???hope it helps...good luck..-Adam

Took it in and the code read that it was the NBSU.

Asked for a price quote and about dropped dead at the quote. 300 bones. Ummmmm....No.

So I ordered one up for 60 bucks and put it in myself. Took all of 25 minutes......Man Dealerships can really be asshats.
