I was thinking of buying a few hundred gallons of #2 and keeping it in a bulk tank at my house...also seriously considering buying the off road diesel...off road is 2.60 a gal vs. 3.05 a gal...not to worried about getting my tanks dipped....what is the shelf life of diesel...granted I will go through 200 gal pretty quick....but what additives if any should I add to the bulk tank? thanks in advance....mike

An algaecide to prevent algae formation and a fuel treat for lubricity. If you have writing on your truck though-BEWARE--I know some troopers who have told me we are fair game for fuel testing and the fines are unbelievable. They think if you have off-road iron--you will put off-road,untaxed fuel in your on-road rigs.

I am now pulling from my 2nd bulk tank which I had filled the week before Katrina hit last year (taxed fuel). The tank holds about 200 gallons and sat unused until last month.

I dumped 16 oz of diesel treatment in it and put about 10 gallons in the truck.
Truck ran fine so I have been filling up off the tank since.

I'd recommend putting a locking fuel cap on the truck if you run the red....i've heard of one case where someone was checked when the truck was parked at a truck stop.

I know they have done it at an indoor farm show before. Nailed a bunch of farmers

I was told that 2-3 years ago it was done at the farm show that OSU puts on near Columbus too.

Every diesel truck that drove in, was checked.

The fines were posted about a week or so ago on a similiar thread. Not worth it---even if you did 1 tankful of off-road--that red dye would linger around come test time and bite you in the a**.

tell 'em that you make your own biodiesel out of beets & watermellons! Can't help it if it turns out red!

There are home heating oil deliverly trucks around here that tap into their fuel tanks frrom the main tank they carry. I know about the dip test but they don't seem to worried about it:rolleyes:

..any one have any idea what the fines are if caught runnin dyed fuel?

I was told by my fuel supplier that the fine is $100 per gallon currently in your tank or $1000, whichever is greater, for your first offense. Second offense goes up dramatically. I'm not sure if that's correct or not, since others have said it's up to $10,000 for a first offense.

Either way, it'll cost you big time. I have both on & off road storage tanks, & it's not worth the risk to me to run red. I have actually witnessed two checkpoints dipping tanks, but haven't been personnaly "dipped" myself.

yeah but have you ever seen a trk get dipped that was not hauling a large equipment trl...and doesn't have any writting or dot numbers on it?

Yes. Both checkpoints were on 4-lane highways, but not interstates. The DOT had cones & signs set up & all diesel powered vehicles were to pull over. I presume even VW TDIs were getting dipped. I was going the opposite direction both times, so I didn't have to pull over since they were only checking on one side of the road.
