Can any one point me to a web page or something that tells me where all the lub points are on my truck? I have read somewhere that there are 11 points. It sure would be nice to see a picture or something like that so I dont miss one! The owners manual leaves a lot to be desired.

I read this thread and probably have a dumb question. When do you know that you have put enough grease into these various spots? For the ball joints it is easy to see whether the rubber boot is "full" but whats the right thing to do in general?

Thanks

I have heard that 2-3 squirts in each zerk is enough. JMO and as I said, that is what I heard.

There is different schools of thought here but generally I put 2 or 3
pumps in the ball joints unless the boots look real empty and with the
tie rod ends and such I put in a few pumps of grease or until I see a
little fresh grease weep out of the boots. Also, use a black
grease (Moly based) as it is much better for this than a regular
lithium grease.

I try to over grease the hell outa it till fresh grease is puking out from the boots. Gota be casrefull with this method since sometimes the grease dont wana come out and you could pop a boot or if you get to crazy and dont pump a bit and let it weep for a bit and the pump again it will really push out on the boot. You can feel the little rubber boot and feel how firm or not firm it is. Grease seems to keep squirting out and making a mess. probably not right and its overkill but thats the way I do her

What is a good type of grease gun and nozzle to get? I still need to get my own. Any ideas?

I have been wanting to try Schaffers grease, lotsa people rave about it. I mostly use the high end syn/moly valvoilen stuff. High pressure for use in wheel bearings and all that. Any cheap grease gun will work but the rubber hosed end ones are generally easiest to use on a truck. Get one that takes the grease tubes or cartrages and buy your grease in tube or cartrage or what ever you call it form. Packing a grease gun is a PITA and messy. The air powered or electric ones are the bombdigity though.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley23.gif They are expensive though

Edit: you should be able to score a gun for 15-20$Edited by: ratlover

I bought a gease gun kit (http://www.gmdieseltech.com/store2/cart.php?target=product&action=view&product_id=16207&category_id=258) from DmaxalliTech. It came with a tube of Schaffer's grease, a flex hose, a 90 degree fitting and a pistol-grip gun. It's a nice setup.

i took the truck to the gm dealer for an oil and a lube job, he only greased 6 fittings i have an 04.5 lly D/A 3500 4 by 4 crew cab dually sounds like he missed 5 of them .it took the mechanic 4 hours to change the oil , put a spin on filter, he would of thrown the magnet away if i didnt inform him of it ,and a fuel filter next time im doing it myself and save me 3 hours of aggravation .

I might add that your supposed to lift the tire off the ground by the lower A arm before you grease the lower ball joint or you wont get any fresh grease in the friction areas of the joint. It will just pump grease in on top of joint.

When you see the boot start to expand you've lubed it enough.

I can't get my grease gun to even snap onto those two fittings!
