: Upgrade to DVD navigation system

I have a friend who is wanting to upgrade his stock stereo to a factory DVD navigation system. He likes the factory look.

He drives a 2004 1500 crew cab.

He found a factory head unit on e-bay for $500. He didn't buy it yet.
The dealer told him they couldn't do it because it wasn't wired for it from the factory. His truck has XM satellite, but not on-star (if that matters).

What all would he need to do to make this possible? He's willing to do it himself.

Thanks in advance for the responses.

Look thru the Technical do it yourself section down below it will tell you everything you will need to know. I just did this and couldn't have done it without the help of this and the help of all who contributed.

Does he have the factory Bose speaker system?

He doesn't have the Bose system.

It's just the factory with XM. Does the non-bose sound system have the factory amp in the truck (or a amp at all)? Would he need to install the LUX amp from scratch and route the wiring that goes along with it?

Thanks for the link tgater.

Nope. You can buy a Nav unit for the non-Bose trucks. IIRC, it is the unit that comes out of Buick Rendevous.

Ben's posts in this thread are very relevant to what your friend wants to do:
