Woah! Trying to find synthetic 75w-90 gear oil is tough! Found one quart bottles at the NAPA but passed it up due to the cost - thought I could find a one gallon jug at a better price. NOT! The only other place that had that oil was the local Chevy dealer (Clarksville, TN) at a price of $26 per pint. Yeah, pint. Not quart. Not a gallon. Their Allison spin on is $25 and change. Got a a WIX spin on but it is going back to NAPA since the holes would be covered by the magnet. I'll also get the gear oil while I'm there.


Guess there really is no substitute for genuine parts.

George at AVlube is the best price I found for Mobil 1 75W-90. It was about $68.00 a case. It was just cheaper for me to buy a case than just 6 quarts.

Thanks for the pricing help guys. I didn't plan ahead for this work and expected to do a one stop shopping at the local NAPA. Today I took back the Alli (Wix) filter since I ended up going to the dealer to get the exact filter. Next time....

If you have a place that services Allison transmissions nearby, you can get the filter from them. Where I am at, the Allison shop wants $8.87 + tax for the filter.

I chalk this shopping exerience up to "where not to go for oils and filters" either because of higher prices or just not carrying the correct oil or filters. Just something about being able to go and get the stuff on the way home from work and DIY on the weekend. Guess I'll have to plan ahead, order and wait for the stuff to arrive at the door step.

Question for greg @ lube specialist: I have read where 75w-140 is recomended for heavy towing, and 75w-90 is for regular duty. I tow 10k lbs 8 to ten times a year (toy hauler). Which I would concider medium duty. Would it be possible to use 2 qts of 75w-90 and 2 qts of 75w-140 in the rear end, and end up with about 75w-115?? Or what would your recomendation be for med use? I am assuming the LB7 and the LLY motors both have the same engine oil filter? I just changed mine this weekend with a FRAM bought at Wally World. The little computer manual they had in the filter section did not have the 04's but did have the 03's and prior, so I bought one of those. Hope its correct at least it looked ok to me.????

I wouldn't use the Fram filter media to wipe my bu## with, much less put one of their filters on my $40K+ truck. Might as well screw on a roll of charmin, at least it's made better.


Seriously though, fram filters are cheap and I don't just mean in price. Go to your local Napa and look for their cutaway comparison of a Wix vs. Fram. Then it will be clear why you don't want to use a Fram. Go with OEM(ACDelco) or Wix. I also hear that Baldwin makes a good filter.

Thanks letting me know about that. I was not sure, but it the OEM filter felt MUCH heavier, when it came off after I drained out most of the oil. Think I will change it this weekend with a better quality.
