Hi All. I'm a new DMax guy. Just got mine this week.

My name is Tom Brewer and I live in Moriarty, New Mexico on a little piece of land with my wife, Carla, and daughter (for one more year...then she's off to college), also have a son who lives in Albuquerque.

I'm not new to diesels as I have a collection of Ford IDI's (pre-powerstroke for the non-Ford educated). I've been a member at the sister site oilburners.net for quite a while.

My wife had been telling me for several months to go look for a new truck that I wouldn't have to work on. Didn't want one. But it just so happens that she works at a Chevy dealership, so last week she brought one home for me to try for the weekend. I went and signed the paperwork on Monday so now it's mine. Couldn't pass up zero % interest along with her rather substantial GM employee discount.

Bare with me as I have a lot to learn. I'm trying to get wrapped around this whole variable geometry turbo, intercoolers, 4 valves per cylinder, common rail injection, and computer controlled thing. It took me a couple of days to get used to the bowtie thingy on the grill, but I think I'm mostly past that now. I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions in the future.

For now I have one very puzzling question. What is the recommended break in oil change mileage? Most of the time that should happen between 500 and 1000 miles (I'm at 500 miles already). And what is the normal oil change interval after that? All I can find is that the engine oil life computer gizmo will tell me when it's time. I can see that's going to be a problem! Also should the tranny fluid and filter be changed at that time as well?

Thanks in advance for the education

Tom

Welcome. No break in oil. If you change your oil @ 5000 miles, you will be treating it nice. It takes awhile to get used to the fact that oil changes are not as frequent in these trucks like the gassers are. Enjoy your new ride.

I am sure some of the Gurus around here will chime in with more info.:D

you'll want to change the spin-on tranny filter at about 7500 for its first change

I'm old fashion! I changed the oil and filter at 300 miles and then every 4000 for regular oil or 7500/8000 for synthetic! The first change is probably a waste of money, but it makes me feel better! Just my 3¢ (adjusted for inflation)

Change the oil at 500, I just did mine at 600 or so and it was surprisingly mettalic....

You should also change the fluid in the differential (both front and rear) once they have had time to break in (500-1000 miles or so), I just did the rear and the fluid looked like crap and also had metal in it.

Read up on the forums and use the search feature. enough here to keep you busy for quite a while. Look in the maintenance section....

Take care
Mike
