: driveability dual disk vs. single disk clutch?
duramaxphil 07-06-2006, 05:08 PM Ok since I now have my truck, I know the dual mass flywheel will eventually fail me. So I might as well pick my clutch out now.
I love the way my truck drives now so it will be hard to sacrifice the smoothness of it for a dual disk clutch but that might be what it takes. I want a clutch that is very strong and capableof big power and a lot of stop and go driving. (I live in a rural farm area) The clutch will do some towing, and maybe a truck pull or two per year. (MAYBE)
Basically I will get the dual disk if its not to bad in terms of drivability, and if its vibration everyone talks about is not too annoying. I wish I could drive both first but thats probably not an option. So let me know
Phil
Deadeye 07-07-2006, 11:29 AM I drive a SMF/DDC with ceramic plates every day. It will hold more power than you will ever put on your truck. If driveability like stock is what you really want, get a single disc kit. It will hold plenty of power. You can get a organic, kevlar, ceramic or feramic clutch plate for the single.

Thanks deadeye, I take it the feramic is the strongest clutch plate. How will it drive compared to the dual disk ceramic? And how much abuse would a single take compared to the dual? Could you do any truck pulls with a single disk?
I will take as much imput as anyone wants to give me
thanks,
Phil
south bend clutch 07-07-2006, 05:04 PM Sorry to step in here but if you are going to do ANY sled pulling you will need to get the DD clutch. A single disc is simply not designed to be abuse in this nature.

duramaxphil 07-07-2006, 05:48 PM Thanks Peter, I guess I better consider a dual disk even though Im not sure of pulling it or not. How close to a stock feel is the dual disk clutch? Is the sound tolerable? and Is the peddal very heavy to push. Them are the three main concerns for me
GMCfourX4 07-07-2006, 05:58 PM I'm in the same boat as Phil... I really like the feel of the stock clutch (especially after the REALLY stiff clutch I had in my 6.5TD... which had a lot of VERY annoying clutch chatter...). When my DMF gives up the ghost, I plan on going straight to an aftermarket clutch setup, but I'd like to find out as much info as I can now so I have a plan when the time comes. I like the idea of the power a DD will hold, but in all honesty I probably won't go too far beyond a standard programmer, and my truck will never see a sled-pull.

jugghack2 07-08-2006, 10:32 PM I have a single disk in my truck and the push on the peddle hase made my left leg a little bigger than the right. other than that I love it and if no sled pulling would recomend it to any one. as for chatter get the stealer to up the idle to 725 and you will never notice the diffrence

OSUDuramax 07-12-2006, 01:02 AM DD if you plan to pull at all down the road.... If you go with a SBC single then you can't upgrade to a dual with the same flywheel.....Just keep that in mind... My single uses the same flywheel as a dual but i would recomend a DD from the start....they are alot of fun on the street as well...... It is your choice on the brand....

Deadeye 07-18-2006, 12:34 PM Shipping wt. is 98 lbs and packaging is probably only 3 lbs. Not much different than DDC. Probably due to cast Flywheel wt ??? I will try to check it out when I can.
