About one week ago I noticed a metallic squeek eminating from the left rear. I figured it might be a wayward rock or the wheel bearing going bad. So while jacking up the truck I made a more thorough visual check and lo and behold...

I think that the caliper bracket (?, not sure what it is called) snapped while trying to release the parking brake on the boat ramp. I hadn't seen this on DP. It looks to me like it snapped just to the rear of the parking brake cable tab and it might be a weak point on the bracket. Unfortunately the dealer is closed today, so it will have to wait until morning. I'll post the results (part number, cost etc) tomorrow.

Well, not only did the backing plate break, the rotor cracked and then the parking brake pads from the 11 to 1 o'clock postion had disintegrated. So a major failure of multiple components. Right now I can only speculate...

I never dunk the boat trailer until the bearings have cooled, but maybe the hot truck rotor warped, then cracked, causing the backing plate and parking brake to go. I'm inclined to think that the backing plate failed first, but I can't think of a good reason why it would (or should) break... Third scenario, parking brake hangs up.

Question for the experts, any chance that the extra resistance would cause the rear diff to heat up and start leaking??

I'll post part numbers and costs as soon as I get them.

I can't tell you why it happened but I can tell you It happened to me.

Truck was 6 months old with less than 10000 miles on it. It was all replaced on warranty at that time though.

Mine was all covered under the warranty too. Maybe just a bad run of backing plates...

Mine is going to the dealer in the morning for a hung up left rear parking brake too. I'll have them look at the backing plate first.

Second time to dealer for the same problem in 5 months.
