My 84 6.2 Suburban with 240k has come down with a problem
When driving the highway today I suddenly heard a clatter, like a lifter- and noticed some white smoke out of both tail pipes.

I slowed down and got off at next exit (mine) and drove the rest of the way home at about 30 mph. The clatter is very loud and the truck looks like a mosquito fogger when driving around 30 and runs rough.

The noise seems to be coming from the valley where the injection pump sits. I noticed when I cranked it later that it is blowing diesel out of the tail pipes against the garage wall. Cranking with the hotwire off the pump is fairly even ( checking cranking compression)

Is there something in that pump that could make that noise?
I am convinced it is not an injector becuase the smoke is from both tail pipes ( no crossover) and all exhaust manifold pipes are about equally warm.Edited by: eppoh

Sounds like the advance has gone south - fuel is injected too early or too late for complete combustion.

White vapor is un-ignited fuel - dark smoke is unburned fuel.

Or - could be at 240k miles the timing chain jumped a tooth.

Either way - time for some serious maintenance.
