: Pinging Sound....

For the first time last night I heard a pinging sound coming from the engine. When I was getting on the highway and had the max amount of fuel going to the engine.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif The sound was coming from the top end side of the power curve. Then it happened again when I goosed it about 80mph the sound came back.

Side note....the truck sat for over two hours.....had a no start again. When I went home I tried it again and could not get it to happen.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Not that I want it to happen again(REALLY)....just wanted to see the RPMs it was pinging.

What RPMS was it happening at, maybe your pilot injection shutting off?

It was happening above 2000RPMs for sure.....I want to say 2500-2600RPMs.

I have the same setup you do and I have heard the odd ping or knock from my truck as well. I think the juice has a lot to do with it. I get a horrible cold knock sometimes....actually goes away if you give it more pedal...I think its a timing issue.....combined with the pilot injection turning off. I have heard ping at low RPMs and high. The newest trick is when sitting at idle in park...if I rev the motor I get the slightest ping or knock right as the pedal moves.....not a big deal but I hear it.

Overall I don't think this is a big deal....might our injectors be a little out of spec? yeah maybe....but it runs well....so I don't get too excited

Pilot injection shuts off at ~2500rpm. It's the direct injection you are hearing, your nice quiet dmax will sound like an old school diesel like a 7.3PSD without the pilot injection working. That's perfectly normal and working as intended.

Camstyn,

That is good news. I was worried it might be a bigger problem. Drove it today and did not have the noise. It must have been just right last night to get it.

Thank you again for the lesson in injectors.

403Turbo,

So far it only at high RPMs....everything sounds good at idle and cool.

Thanks for the info.

Sound was there today.....

It was around 2400RMP range....it was loudest when I would back slightly off the fuel. It would go away when more fuel was added or I completely back off the throttle.

I do not know if this changes anything......thank you again for all the info!

Yeah if I get a timing knock it goes away if you use enough throttle.....kinda makes you cringe a little when you hear it....diesel or not it doesn't sound right.

You symptoms sound a lot like mine.......it not just you. I really feel it a juice thing...seems like a while back someone else mentioned this as a juice noise. I run in level 5 all the time....seems to happen to me more when the engine is not quite warmed up, not stone cold but not up to temp.

maybe we need better fuel.....not enough cetane or something?

Sounds like the pulse timing to the injectors is going. I had the same thing. It slowly got worse. One day the truck started blowing white smoke every where and almost died, then just suddenly cleared up. I had a tech check it out, and he said the balance was fine on the injectors, but herd the pinging as well. It eventually started pinging all the time (loudly) like it was a rod going bad. The volume varied with rpms. The tech finally said he knew it was the injectors but figured it was the pulse timing and ordered all new injectors to be put in (thats what I was told, and I'm stickin to it). Thats where my truck is now. Great, new injectors! Boo, no truck! By the way, it's a 02 with 52,000 fun miles on it. Super Diesel
