: Light towing over Teton Pass

Well, this weekend I went camping in Yellowstone. On the way back I decided to go back through the Tetons and cut across from Jackson, WY back to Idaho. I was towing a pretty lightweight 25' Aerolite camper. All total between trailer, truck, cargo and passengers I probably weighed in a little over 11,500 lbs.

If you aren't familiar with that region of the country Teton Pass is a 10% grade leaving Jackson, WY on highway 22. I'm not exactly sure on the length, but Wikepedia says it peaks 11 miles from Jackson.

There was slow traffic in front of me, so I was only going, at most, 30 mph on the way up. Tempereture outside was about 78 at the bottom and 73 at the top. I saw my temp gauge peak at around 230 when the fan kicked on. As soon as the fan came on the temps stopped going up and slowly began to fall. Keep in mind I was not getting much airflow through the radiator prior to the fan engagement due to slow traffic. I was also only turning about 2k rpm, so the fan wasn't pulling a whole lot of air either. Transmission temps peaked a little under 200 and didn't really move from there until I started to go down.

All in all I was very happy with how it did on the trip. I haven't checked my mileage by hand yet, but I think I I probably averaged around 13.5 for the whole trip. That was running mostly 70, sometimes 75, on the interstate and 65 on the state highways.

that pass is a real test. I've been over it a few times and near the top there are some cars that probably can't do much over 40-45 pedal to the metal with the grade and altitude.

Can't find a reason? hehehee...how about just a road trip to somewhere you haven't been? It is fantastic country. I criss-crossed Wyoming when I lived there and I loved seeing the sights.

Go For It, duramex! Yer not that far away in Idaho Falls. Alpine Junction awaits you! :ro)

Heck yeah, definately some beautiful country over there. It is absolutely worth the short drive just to see it, even if you don't have any other reason to go. There's no time like the present.

Guy wants to make sure when pulling a heavy trailer down that pass that the brake controller is set a little tighter. lol I know from experience on that hill as i burned up some brakes getting stopped about 1/2 way down that 10% grade. Ooops Was able to finish the trip when all cooled down and chalked that one up to experience!!!

Go ahead rub it in about your nice little camping trip. Nothing happens I am taking the chevy out there in August to see the country. My trip will be about 6000 miles once its all said and done.

Just spent 6 weeks in that area (Victor, ID), and drove back and forth over the pass several times with my new '06 LLY/ZF6. I wasn't towing, and the truck had plenty of power. In fact, I didn't even downshift to pass a guy on the lower side in Idaho. The manual trannny holds it back pretty nice on the grade, too. My temp gauge runs at just 200 when warm. Very happy with the truck, and still getting used to it.

Have you been to Lucatelli Cafe in Victor? Those gals cook it up!

Have you tried the Biodiesel from High Road Biodiesel in Driggs? Word on the street was it was reliable, but I didn't have the guts to put it in a brand new truck.

Idaho is beautiful.

Very Beautiful! Try Jill's Place in St. Anthony Idaho. Triple stack of pancakes you cant even eat. Looks like a darn birthday cake. Did your sway bars help much over stock?
