Hi there,

I have been looking at buying a 95 Silverado 6.5 TD 4X4 and have a few questions. I don't know much about diesel and my head is still spinning from reading the 6.5 FAQ thread. The truck has 203,000 miles and a new injector pump. Here are my concerns / questions. Are the miles too high on it? The check engine light is not on, but when I try the paperclip jumper test it flashes a code 78. It starts fine cold and hot, but does occationally blows out some light colored smoke on cold start up. And there seems to be smoke puffing out of the dipstick when its running. It runs real smooth though seems to have plenty of power. Should I make an offer or run away as fast as possible? I plan on using it for light farm work and not much towing.

Thank in advance.

The code 78 could have been fixed but they forgot to clear the ECM...I would take the truck for a test drive - disconnect the batteries for a few minutes in some parking lot to clear the ECM - continue on test drive and then check for codes again before heading back to the dealer.....

203,000 miles on a diesel is like 20,000 on a gasser. they run forever. i have 2 6.2's that are well over 500,000 miles. as far as blowing smoke upon startup, i do the same thing, just a light puff of white smoke. never throwin any codes because of it.

:blizzard: I think you might be stretchin the truth a little about the 6.5, but it could possibly be good for another 100 - 200k if it was well taken care of.

Ok on the code and life expectancy of a diesel.

What about the air / smoke coming out of the oil fill and dipstick hole. Is that normal for a diesel?

Thanks

Code 78 is a Wastegate problem, either low of high boost. When driving it punch it and watch for excessive black smoke and see if the SES light comes on then.
