: Injector Cleaners
Bodysurfer 05-10-2004, 04:56 PM Hey everyone, my question is in regards to the injectors and adding some type of pour-in-the-tank cleaner. The GM book tells you not to add anything extra (in fuel or oil). We all know that putting fuel injector cleaner in GAS engines is a good thing.
What about diesel like ours? Is there a good one out there? Picked one up from a auto parts shop. Its call "Delo Diesel Fuel Injector Cleaner" from Chevron. Here is a pic of the bottle:

dmaxalliTech 05-10-2004, 05:12 PM Most of the quality DFA's include a cleaning agent. Not familier with that particular product though
dmax lover 05-11-2004, 01:55 AM I believe that product is new on the market - all that is delo is good...
Look in the TSB section for updated info from GM on additives. Cleaning injectors is good, using lubricity additive is good, emulsifying additive is bad...

patrick 05-12-2004, 09:45 PM i give valvoline to my customers and it helps.
cowboydave 05-13-2004, 09:56 AM Why is an emulsifying additive bad?
dmax lover 05-13-2004, 11:04 AM An emulsifier will disperse water, a demulsifier will cause it to form into larger droplets that have a greater probability of being caught by the water trap in your fuel filter.
The reasons I follow GMs recommendations and avoid an emulsifying additive are...
1. The fuel system pressure is at greater than 20k psi. Water at that pressure is a "cutting agent". It is also highly corrosive at that pressure.
2. Water in emulsion washes away lubrication needed by injectors. The high pressure fuel injection system in our trucks is highly sensitive to fuel lubricity (requires minimum of 450 micron WSD on HFRR test) I believe lack of fuel lubricity is the #1 cause of injector failures (There is a presentation from Bosch that says it is - so why should I think any differently.)
3. Water staying emulsified is temperature dependent. An emulsifier might put minute amounts of water in suspension, but as the fuel cools it will fall out of suspension and corrode whatever it falls on to.
4. If water is in great enough concentration, will turn to steam at tip of injector with enough force to blow your injector tip off or crack the injector body. Possibly damaging pistons or turbo along the way... $$$

DURAMAXED03 05-13-2004, 12:35 PM emulsify, demulsify the battle continues.......
neverenuf 05-13-2004, 01:50 PM I use a 2 cans of additives per tank of fuel. One to emulsify and one to demulsify. Can't go wrong.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

CRUSHER 05-14-2004, 05:47 AM Bodysurfer----I'm not familiar with the Delo fuel treatment. I can tell you that I add Primrose 405 at every fill-up. I'm not saying this is the only product on the market that's worth a s**t. I'm simply telling you what I use.----------------later------------http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif-----Phil
Frank Blum 05-14-2004, 11:28 PM Ditto what John said. I have never caught one drop of water in either filter. Later! Frank
Bodysurfer 05-17-2004, 11:13 AM Thx guys, well I added it and still running down that tank. Cant really tell anything diff but who knows. Cant hurt....I guess. Then again my rig only has 11K miles on it. Just dont want to run into any injector problems.
Anyone else using any products out there?
LATE!

dbloyd 05-17-2004, 02:03 PM i saw another duramax owner at the pump one day and he added 2 quarts of tranny fluid to his tank. he said it kept his injectors clean. whats up with that?
Jeff1 05-17-2004, 05:47 PM I use Stanadyne "World" and "Performance" formula fuel additives. My truck runs great after putting in these additives. I've learned to go to my local Flying J (Conoco) and fillup there exclusively. My 2004 duramax runs like a top...lots of power and very responsive!
I recently installed a 2-micron secondary fuel filter for some added protection to the fuel delivery system...getting 18.6 miles/gal in town and 21.6 miles/gal on long haul trips. (Not hauling or pulling any loads at this time).
Fred G 05-18-2004, 10:40 PM I'm at 28K miles and just added delo on my refuel. I've been running standadyne since 7-8K miles and my truck's performance and MPG have been very consistent so I'm not expecting anything big. Still, clean injectors work their best and do not stick, if I accomplish those two things I'll be happy. BTW..found Delo at Autozone, they had no less then 3 or 4 different brands diesel injector cleaners. If I notice anything with the Delo I will post at a later date.

Jeff1 05-20-2004, 07:56 AM I am correcting my post on May 20, 2004 concerning "additives". I installed a Racor 2-micron Pre-filter kit from Greg. My Duramax appears to be operating well.
Bodysurfer 05-24-2004, 11:49 AM Hey Fred G,
Let me know how the Delo works for you. Well, went thru the entire tank w/ Delo in it and no problems. Truck seems to run a little better with the stuff in it than without (notice the diff on the next fill up). Maybe I should throw some more of the Delo in.....
LATER!
