i just read this, trans fluid goes thru rad thru a 5 tiered coolerthen thru the extra small cooler in front of the a/c condenser?
i thought it just went thru the small one in front of the a/c only, would our trans run cooler if they didn't get heated up by 200 deg coolent first?

Pretty sure that it goes to the aux. cooler first (in front of radiator), then through the end-tank cooler on pass. side of radiator. I would not remove the radiator tank from the system, it helps the tranny get up to operating temp quicker, and helps maintain optimal tranny temp in winter (cold weather) states. Cheers.

it doesnt go thru the radiator. Only thru the trans cooler itself ;)

There is a 5 plate aluminum stacked laminova style cooler inside the passenger side tank of the radiator, the tranny fluid goes there first and gets most of its cooling and then it goes up front to the little air exchanger cooler right in the middle behind the grill.

ahhh didnt know that...I always thought it was just going thru the transcooler itself. duhhh

Per GM parts diagram and hose routing it goes from trans to radiator out to aux cooler then back to tranny.

demp223 is right.

thanks, in the old days [70's-80's] we used too just run to an aux cooler and not thru rad,, i think i'd reather see trans temps in the summer at 150 then 200 , i think trany would work better? and last longer,,,mike L any thoughts

I do not recommend eliminating radiator heat exchanger. You may lose 15-25 deg cooling ability. Ford tried this on the PSD for a couple of years and went right back to the radiator.

The RAdiator does two things not just one. It cools the fluid in high temperature ares but it also warms the fluid in cold climates. The warm fluild also helps the overall life of the transmission for those that drive the truck in city type driving.

not up on the allys, but the optimum temp for the old turbo 350s & 400s was 180 F.

In my experience, the o/p side of the radiator (where the trans cooler is) is typically at least 20-30 degrees cooler than the engine temp. This of course depends on ambient temps and operating conditions.

The passenger side of the radiator, where the trans cooler is, is the COLD side of the radiator. ( the DMAX radiator is a cross flow radiator)
