I have run this oil over 5,000 miles with no problem.

I like Mobil 1 but you should be fine with the Valvoline. Make sure if you have the G80 limited slip rearend that they added a friction modifier, for this I would definately recomend the GM product.

WHAT ???>? I think youve been reading one of them Dodge boys manuals if you need friction modifier ! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wacko.gif Definately not needed with the G80. I've ran valvoline in the past and its just as good as the others. I prefer Mobil 1 now. Changed the rear end at 500 miles and again at 15k. Came from the factory with only 2 quarts in the rear.....Thanx Mr Good wrench http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif Changing the rear end is easier than a oil change. Don't waste good money paying some one else to do the light work. There is a handy dandy drain plug right on the bottom of the rear diff. 4 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic about $7.00 a quart.

What BlueMaxxxx said.

Mine was low as well. Threw in 4q of the Mobil 1 synthetic 4000 miles ago. No problemo.

Hey BlueMaxxxx edumicate me on why we don't need friction modifier??

The G80 is all gear driven. There are no clutches in it. No clutches, no friction modifier need for the clutches.

I thought our trucks had an eaton unit? If so it uses clutch packs and is not a gear driven unit. From the eaton web page:

Patented carbon friction disc technology enhances performance and durability while reducing warranty claims

<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /> The stopped flyweight will trigger a self-energizing clutch system, which results in the cam plate ramping against a side gear.
But I also found this:

Maintenance free; requires no lube additives
Amazing what you can learn on the internet http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif!

I always knew it was a clutch type LS so I naturally assumed you need to add the friction modifier like every other LS I have owned. Oh well I guess that will save me a few bucks on my next rearend oil change!

Me bad. Should have looked a little closer before posting, but yes it does have clutches, and no it does not need friction modifier.

Sorry.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif I'll do my best to " edumicate " you !

A.) Open owners manual. Its that black book in the glove compartment.

B) Read directions

Case closed. Changing the rear end lube is simple, inexpensive and takes far less time than a oil change. If you drive a Dodge you might want to get 4 oz of graphite additive. At least that's what my manual says. I try to read them before I perform maintenance or dispense advice. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

The friction modifier is not needed as per GM becuase the GM lube has the modifier in it already. This is true with most synthetic lubes as well.

If you jack up the passenger rear side, and not the driver's side rear, you can get an extra 1/2 quart in there.

I just put in 4.5 qts of the 70/140 HD GM grapejuice that I ordered from gmpartsdirect.com:

In other words, if the lube you use doesn't have additive then you do need to add it.

BlueMaxxxx,

You funny http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif You accused him of possibly reading a Dodge owners manual and then you described the G80 as having no clutches and all gears.

It sounds like you are the one dreaming Dodge because that's the description of the Dodge Anti-Spin differential and it doesn't require additive.

Hey hoot !

I don't know what you've been smokin but I'd sure be interested in seeing the post where I said something about clutches and gears ! OOOOPS ! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

No idea what Dodge you have but my '03 1500 hemi with limited slip calls for 75-140 Synthetic with 4 oz of graphite additive. Thats right.....Synthetic AND graphite. My Bronco called for the same deal ....Lube PLUS addive ! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

So dont forget to skip the additive in your Dodge if you want to burn the rear end up. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif Reading the owners manual......It's a good thing !

Mr. X, that is funny, cause I have tried to order that stuff from them atleast three times and they say they can not ship it--because the containers are not sealed from the factory!! I emailed them saying why even list it if you can't ship it?! Crazy!

It took about 2 weeks for delivery. And there was a few ounces leakage from one of the quart bottles in the box. I don't know what their problem is. AV Lube delivers oil, and Primrose.

THe leakage wasn't too bad. I had some extra HD 70/140 stuff from the 1st time I changed out the 70/90 after 1st 500 miles of towing.

Then I had a rear diff seal leak and when the dealer fixed it they replaced my HD 70/140 with the regular 70/90 so I had to re-do it with the HD 70/140. It probably doesn't really need the HD stuff but what the hell. I want to see how loing I can make this baby go.

My diff lube has had about 4 changes so far. Anyway, it was delivered by Airborne Express which, depite their moniker, came by ground.
