: Noisy Retrax
HeavyD 05-09-2004, 09:03 PM Ok, I finally got the Retrax and got it installed. Looks great and as far as the adjusting goes, I think I have everything just about right on. One problem, it makes a squeeling or screeching noise when I open or close it. This only seems to happen when it is warm and in the sun. Today it was about 75 and sunny and it was noisy. It cooled off this evening and sounds smooth. Has anyone esle had this problem? I think it is the bottm side of the polycarbonate hitting the rail. I did not think that the polycarbonate was so sensitive to temp. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Max Power 05-09-2004, 10:16 PM How much side to side play is there when it's warm? Might be expanding too much. You can also use some emry or sand paper and clean off the bottom of the track where the bearings roll. Usually this needs to be done after a bit of use. The wipe the area you sanded clean.
jbplock 05-10-2004, 01:05 PM Had the same problem when I first installed mine. Turns out I had the rails to close together. After adjusting for adequate side to side play (as MaxPower pointed out) the squeak was gone. I also keep a light film of WD-40 on the tracks.

HeavyD 05-10-2004, 10:24 PM Thanks for the replies guys. Turns out it was the sanding I needed. I also spoke to a guy at Retrax and they said it might be due to too much powder coat on the rails, common problem I guess. They also said to wipe the inside of the rails with Pledge. It is working great now.

EEEEZY 05-14-2004, 10:05 PM Glad to see this was a problem that was easily solved. After several months of looking around, checking websites, asking questions, etc., Retrax is the cover I have decided to get. Just spoke to the guys at the factory yesterday. Everyone that has one of these covers seems to like it, and I would have been disappointed and annoyed to get it and then have this problem turn up with no easy solution! Thanks!
HeavyD 05-15-2004, 02:15 PM The cover seems to be working really well right now. The only thing that is annoying me is that the rubber flap for a lock cover seems to keep popping up. I am going to try and dream soemthing up to fix that. Other than that, it is great.

Greg,
Mine started doing this recently too. It only happens in a strong cross wind. I was thinking I would try some velcro - the type with an adhesive backing. I thought I would try sticking some on the cover and lock. Looks like there may be enough clearance. I'll post if it works or not.

Max Power 05-15-2004, 08:17 PM There is a new cover for that latch that closes to the back instead of the side. This way the wind closes it instead of opens it. I take my latch cover off for the summer as it isn't necessary.

And it's cheap too! only $4 + S&H

Swanny 05-20-2004, 08:56 PM Don't count on that solving your problem, I have the one that closes toward the back & it still pops open http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif the velcro idea might be a winner tho'.
jbplock 05-20-2004, 10:31 PM I tried some velcro with an adhesive backing but it didn't stick well enough. There is room for the two pieces of velcro but I need to add a better adhesive ... maybe some 3M emblem adhesive would work. I was hoping the new cover would be the fix but I guess I'll have to tinker some more with the velcro... Anyone have any other suggestions?

modelman 06-21-2004, 08:56 PM There is definately a design problem with the lock cover.I have had the same problem with the cover opening and I believe the straps are too strong. They are located on the back. I am going to shave them down thinner or notch them so that they are weaker and see if that helps.
Max Power 06-21-2004, 09:27 PM I take my cover off for the summer. No need for it.

I agree, removing the cover inthe summer is probably the best solution! The plastic cover stays stiff when it's cold in then winter and doesn't open. I tinkered with the veclro some more but wasn't able to get it to stick well enough to the cover and lock.
