I tried to look this up but seems no one else has this problem. Noticed 2 small drops of oil on my drive( I am obsessive compulisive about my vehicles)(sp) any way I a look underneath and on my driver side CV on the inner side there was oil on it. I couldnt see it come from anywere else and it looked like the diff was wet around the seal area. Anyways checked my fluid level today and it seemed to be fine. What could cause this and how hard is it to fix and a price on parts maybe?? Oh yeah its a 02 ECSB duramax 4X4.

Did you notice any oil comming from up higher on the diff, near the screw in vent cap? It's kind of hard to see up there but feel around with a paper towel or clean rag. I had a problem with oil seeping around the area you did but found a loose vent cap. The oil had run down onto a lip thats up there and eventually made it's way down the whole side of the diff.

Oscar,

The vent cap it about 4 inches in diameter and unless it's been changed it will most likely be black in color (yellow in the pic below). As TC Dmax pointed out Oil can leak from the cap if they become loose.

ALso see the Feb 03 GM Tech link article (http://service.gm.com/gmtechlink/images/issues/feb03/TLFeb03e.html#story13) regarding synthetic lube for the front Diff.

Oscar, wipe the next drops off with a clean white rag or paper towel. If it has any aluminum flakes in it, change the oil and let us know if it still leaks. Been there and done that. The leak on mine went away and never came back in the 80K + miles I owned the truck. Later! Frank

replaced the fluid last night. It was not coming out of the vent though it was dry there for all I could tell :-( I am hoping the seals dont need to be replaced. I have not drove it yet today to see if it is still leaking though. Oh yeah it doesnt leak in the drive way only when moving.

Have you had a look at the other end of the vent hose? See if there is anything dripping out of it and down onto the diff. Just a thought.
