I have been reading the tire database sticky and looking for the answer but now I am just going to ask.

How big of a tire can I get before they start to scrub I don't want to add a suspension life yet but want to fill the wells and get rid of the doughnuts. I was told that 285 on 18 x9 in rim would look good and as high as I could go but I was wondering if 305 would work with raising the torsion bars. A little scrubage OK.

Any advice?
TIA

Don't just read the sticky. Go back and read all the old posts. This question has been answered a hundred times over...

You don't want to spend the cash on a suspension lift, but you will pay the extra money for new wheels and tires that will cost much more because of the 18" hole? I imagine a lift would be cheaper than any combo you are looking at, but I suppose that is beside the point. 285's and up to 305's (though 305 is really pushing it) will fit on the stock rims with minimal trimming of the bumper and liner. If you are concerned about looks, you will probably want to turn the t-bars, which will help a bunch too. If you get away from the stock rims, then the answer is based upon the wheel backspacing you are using. For example, lets assume you go for a 16x8 wheel with 4.5" backspacing. These will stick out a little further than your stock wheels and will make the rubbing more pronounced than using stock rims. If you go with the 18x9's with 4.5" backspacing your wheels will stick out even further (though looks wise, I don't think it is bad) and will pose additional clearance problems. SO, it all depends on the exact combo you are talking about.

Get 285s, 305s will rub without a lift.

Check out my Garage, pics are crappy but they are 285/70/17s and Look pretty good. No lift

Actually Helper leaves and Green keys push me up about 1.5"

305s arent any taller than 285s just wider.

I have had 305/70/16's on stock wheels and 305/70/17's (1" taller) on H2's and neither rubbed. Also put the 305/16's on a 6.0 HD and they cleared fine. You WILL clear 305's depending on the wheel.

The 285s will also rub....at less they did my my friends 2500 on stock 6.5" wheels with the T-bars cranked in hard turns.

I run the 265s, but I know this first hand from riding in his truck.

I guess it all depends on the days production line. LOL

Yea, 305s wont rub on stock wheels with a TBar Crank but even with a TBar Crank theyll rub if there on a wider aftermarket wheel.

You'll have to do a little bit of trimming either way.

BOBD,
I noticed you used a different BS than I have seen while looking at wheels? Everything I have looked at has a 4.5" BS Do you not rub because of the larger BS? Also with the same tire set up do you think you would rub if you had used the 4.5" BS? Thanks in advance for your reply.

My 285's touch the plastic in the wheel well if I turn the wheel all the way backing up. My t-bars are cranked too.

Neither our lly (sold) or lbz with 285's rub nor does our 8.1. And there is no trimming whatsoever.

My 255"s rubbed a little but my 305"s don't rub at all. The 255"s were on 16x8"s and the 305"s are on the stock wheels. Looks to me like I could run 315"s without rubbing on stock wheels. My t-bars are cranked and I have an aftermarket front bumper.

my front bumber, stock, doesn't seem to be even close to hitting. Mine get close to the bottom inside retainer clip for the wheel well liner next to the cab. With stockers and 305's the tires were tucked in inside of this cab corner. The offset of the h2's put it out near it.

I forgot that I had sawzalled some of my fender out, right at the bottom behind the tire. Just inside the flare.

It would definitely rub more with a 4.5" b/s. That's one of the reasons I went w/ the wheels I did. i would go with 5" to 6". Good luck.
