I am currently awaiting, impatiently I might add, http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gifthe arrival of my nictane Cat filter kit which I recently ordered, and have been looking over the instructions so I can get right on it when it gets here. There is a step where a couple of fuel quick disconnects need to be unfastened, but I have never taken one of these off. Is there a special tool that you need for this step? If not, how exactly does it come apart?

Actually they are round, slotted washer-like plastic inserts that, when pushed into the Quick Disconnect, disengage the prongs over the flange that hold the connection together.


Someone said they're about 9 bucks for a set of 6 or 7 different sizes at Sears. You'll only need one size.

You will need a special tool for the line disconnect .........
That is what the tool looks like ... Dual purpose fuel line and Air Conditioning Fuel Line Disconnect Tool Set - 6 Piece... Available just about any where tools are sold ..... Sears comes to mind ......The one pictured cost 8 bucks made by Lisle ....

I owe, I owe, its off to Sears I go....

When I installed my Racor supplemental filter on the frame, I removed the flexible hose between the fuel tank and metal fuel line behind the fuel cooler. I used the same tools shown by Mackin above (mine were purchased at Pep Boys) to remove the two quick disconnects. It took a little bit of fiddling to get the quick disconnects to disengage. I could get the smaller QD one on the smaller fuel return line behind the fuel cooler to pop right off (just experimenting with the tool). However, the larger two quick disconnects on the supply line were more difficult.


So if you first don't succeed, keep on trying. They will eventually disengage. Not sure what the proper technique is. Maybe someone who has done it more than once can supply some suggestions.

I bought 2 different styles of QD tools, a set of plastic inserts similar to those and a scissor-like tool. I struggled and struggled with both tools and failed miserably at getting either connection off. I finally whipped out the tubing cutter. Fortunately, Nick had provided enough hose to reach to frame rail near the cooler where I cut the line.

there is a bit of technique to it. i've done it about 12 times so far.. i slip the plastic white tool over the line, grab the back of the female end with my thumb and pull the white tool into the female end with my middle and forefinger. next i push the male and female ends together slightly as i mash the tool into the female connector. then, while keeping the tool in place i yank on the female end (and tool as 1 piece) and seperate it from the male.. viola!


if it doesn't come right off, try rotating the plastic tool about 20* then try again..

Nick installed the CAT filter system on my '03 two weeks ago and I haven't had any problems with the install. I've put about 1000 miles since the install. Nick did an excellent job even though it was pouring rain at the time. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gif

I can never find anything slightly unusual in stock at the local Sears, so I just ordered the quick disconnect tool from the www.sears.com (http://www.sears.com) website and I am letting UPS bring it to me.
