: Yet another question out of paranoia.

When I'm using my torque to build speed to pass someone in top(5th) gear my tranny has been not holding and downshifting so it'll race to 3 grand. used to be able to hold 5th and accumulate speed right on up to whatever I decide to stop at. Are my c3 clutchpacks toast or am I stricken with another case of paranoia.

Man 7:00a was to early to work....wonder if my customer's in service will notice if I put a dummy in my chair while I sleep under the deskhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Sleepy.gif

on edit everytime my tranny shifts in all but WOT it feels like it's gotta major shift kit in it (think someone broke into my truck and installed a transgo?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif). Oh and my normal 90hp juice is in level 3.Edited by: DURAMAXED03

My 01 always acted that way and if you beat on it some it will adjust to harder shifts for a while. I think it would downshift from 5th to 3rd if you laid into it, then up to 4th...then 5th. It just seemed like way too much rpm difference for a downshift.

But I liked the way it rolled through the gears on acceleration.Edited by: hoot

Hoot,

Your probably right....I'm just a paranoid, it's been almost 14k mile of tire-roastinig fun and I'm waiting for the catch or something to drop out of the bottom of my truck. I'm one of those that'll worry about not having anything to worry abouthttp://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wacko.gif.

When it's rowing thru the gears I was thinking these very pronounced shifts were due to my tranny adjusting line pressure to compensate for my spent clutch packs and with this morning what would normally be a throttle position it would hold on...downshifting to 3rd I was compelled to post. Probably in my sleepy state I didn't realize my foot pushed the pedal to the floor......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif. In any event tanks Hoot...how's the ole cummins doing?

When this happens...your in fifth and it goes to 3 grand. Does it shift back into 5th again on its own? What speeds are we talking about here?

Max Power,

I was going around the 60-65mph area when this happened I was using the top gear torque that is usually there in droves at 2000 r.p.m. I was slowly increasing the pressure on the pedal and it downshifted as I'm gathering to 3rd @ 3k rpm. This place is better than any dealership.

on edit max I reread your posts and I don't remember exactly if it shifted immediatley back to 5th but I want to say yes cuz I let off... Edited by: DURAMAXED03

Could be air temp/power differences, but if you are beginning to slip, will just begin to notice that you need to go deeper into the pedal and deeper until eventually it seems that the Juice just isn't working in 5th gear at all...

Do I understand correctly that you're saying this is normal? The 5-3 (hit limiter for a skosh) then back up to 4th? I've been talking w/the dealer about this w/not much feedback other than reflash and fast learn. Like to know if it is indeed normal. When it drops to 3rd, the missus starts screaming ~

One would think it'd simply drop to 4th as needed then back up to OD.

According to a Question and Answer post that I saw from Allison, the transmission will not shift from 5th to 3rd bypassing 4th. If it is doing so, there is something wrong.

I don't remember exactly where I saw this Q&A, but I will try to find it for reference.

Thanks for the response/link. Lots of good stuff there (read'em all). As w/many FAQ type mat'l/format tend to be general in nature & may come close but not exactly addressing a particular need. The cruise shift stabilization segment I think comes close to my particular case but just when I think I see my ans on the horizon, they drift to their solutions for 03 and later models whereas mine is an 02 and Hoots was an 01. That in itself suggests that there may have been some undesirable characteristics of the earlier models.

There is another segment re shift stablization that is more directly defined but it talks to stablization in controlling the upshifts whereas my experience is problem w/downshifting i.e skipping a gear. In that the dealers in general aren't that experienced in the peculiarities of the allison, I've been keeping an eye open for someone having had experience the same as I ~ thot I seen it in Hoots post. The local dealers approach in my case was to assure it had the latest updates (I wasn't advised until after) then if it acted up, to bring it back in then. It may be another month yet before I can chk it out towing a load.

Thanks again guys ~
