: No fuss tuner/chip in LB7 for towing
Chevy454 06-19-2006, 05:36 PM I'm not out to set any ET/MPH records ('cause I'm saving those for the car in the trailer I'm gonna be towing) but what would be a good no nonsense tuner/chip or whatever on an LB7 Dmax for towing? We have a 45' gooseneck 2-car enclosed we pull, that I'm gonna guess will gross in the 15k neighborhood...is there a good reliable, solid unit that will pick a tad bit of power, yet still be reliable, and *heaven forbid* maybe even pick up some mileage? Again, I'm mostly concerned about how it does in front of our trailer...
BullydogPowered 06-20-2006, 07:49 AM Edge EZ, Predator, Hypertech, Superchip all have good small tunes for towing. out of those id probably go with the Edge EZ
JhnZ71 06-22-2006, 12:52 PM They stopped making the EZ, DONT GET a on the fly tuner. Go with the TTS tow tune.

would like to know why you said that
chloeourdog 06-23-2006, 03:17 PM The EZ for the LLY and LB7 are still available according to Edge's site. I have the EZ for my LLY (my first one was defective OOB, but the second one works fine.) Edge was great to deal with .... on level 1 (towing) the truck really wakes up. Much less downshifting. Have not done level 2 or 3 year (can't afford a tranny or too much diesel ;)
Pro400exc 06-23-2006, 06:48 PM Its not a CHIP

For what you want, find an Edge w/Atitude.You get a nice little display of all yor Parameters EGT,Boost,Trani Slip and they work great on an LB7. Look in the For Sale sec. of this site you'll find one between $400-$500 bucks.Just my Opinion,Alot should agree.
Good-Luck

chevy_9465 06-23-2006, 08:14 PM VanAaken would be my choice for towing, seems to be pretty reliable too
epitaph 06-23-2006, 08:44 PM id also vote for a used edge with attitude. Has an easy to read display that will help you monitor all the things you need to and on the fly power adjustment is awesome.
just make sure you have self control, ive been driving on 5 for almost a month now :(
JhnZ71 06-23-2006, 09:48 PM If you get an adjustable one, I dont care who you are you get Addicted to the power. just a simple downloader. Ive heard TTS has a great tow tune.
JhnZ71 06-23-2006, 09:49 PM This is not to say the others are bad, but for simplicity and ease of use ad downloader would be best
chevy_9465 06-24-2006, 01:41 AM Id have to say its the other way around, what could be simpler than plugging in a box under the hood and then flipping a switch, if i messes up just take it off, with a downloader you can get in trouble if your not careful about what your doing, like forgetting to pull fuses, yanking the cord out to soon and iv heard of downloaders just killing the ecm, if your gonna leave it on the same level all the time your ok.
Chevy454 06-24-2006, 08:45 AM Thanks for the responses...one thing I should've added, is that whichever box/programmer I go with I do *not* want to have to do any tranny work...at least not right now, unless I have to...so is adding a tad more HP a lot to ask of a stock Ally pulling 15k?
Black Max 06-24-2006, 09:04 AM VanAaken would be my choice for towing, seems to be pretty reliable too
:exactly: My choice too. Been using the VA SmartBox E on 70 for a little extra towing our 5th wheel. No driveability issues, and works great. Didn't notice much of a MPG gain, but didn't lose any either.
Ken R 06-29-2006, 01:34 AM Responding to your question. I have the EZ and find it to work fine. I'm sure a lot of other products will also work fine. With the weight you mentioned and what I have been able to ascertain you might want to stay in level one when towing. EGT gauge is a must! I'm running level 3 empty and have found a 1 to 2 MPG increase in most conditions.
Responding to Pro400exc: You have wasted your energy banging new people about "chips". I'm sure others will agree if you installing it and leave it on the truck it's a chip, or a power programmer, or whatever! If you plug it in and then remove it, yes, it's a programmer. Do you feel better now? Offer something constructive. Not everyone is an expert such as you........So what is the top overlap on a racey small block chey camshaft....? Or what total ignition timing do you run on a true 14 to 1, 410 inch small block running on methanol in a 1300 pound sprint car? How do they shift those sprint cars? Or what do you have to do to run a 6.125 rod in a 3.48 stroke small block? Come on let's have some expert answers.......
GlennATBurgerKing 06-29-2006, 06:46 PM I would suggest the VA box also. With just the standard box you wouldn't have any tranny issues and they make really smooth power.
Can't speak to the EZ but from what I've read on these boards there are far more reliability issues with the Juice than with a Van Aaken box. I have also read that the Juice brings on the power a little sooner in the pedal but the 70-110 VA box should do exactly what you need and there should be no tranny issues either. Gauges 1st - always.
Chevy454 06-30-2006, 12:30 PM My programmer/tune money has unfortunately been *redistributed* to pay for my rear end repairs, but I need to get my ducks in a row here...what guages are a must, here? EGT for sure, but boost, or...?
EGT Gauge for sure then the other usual is a boost gauge. I was about $270 Canadian for the boost and pyro gauges along with the pod and the paint to match the interior. If you buy an attitude monitor for the Juice this replaces gauges but you would be about $900.00 I would say. If you watch the for sale section you can usually come up with something - that's where I got my 0-70-110 VA Box
RickDLance 06-30-2006, 05:06 PM Easy, EZ for the LB7!):h
bigblackdmax 06-30-2006, 07:53 PM I tow sometimes with a gvw of over 39000 lbs. All I can say is that the tts tow tune, 80 horse mode, is way cooler egts than my juice on the same power level ever was for towing (and trust me I loved my juice). With that load I hit about 1250 degrees if I really lay into it and when I am cruising at 55 or so I am at about 900 to 950 degrees. I love it and hope I can make something that compares to that on my efi live someday. Good luck. Kevin
