I was just wondering if you guys go by the DIC for oil change or the mileage? I have 7600 miles on my truck and DIC still says 26% left. Do I change it or not? On my Dodge I just went every 6,000 miles.

imho, it just depends on which oil you're runnin' & how hard you're workin' . . . I change every 5K regardless - works for me . . . but - I'm not haulin' a load right now either. Oh yeah - I've run Mobil Delvac 1300 Super (HD Diesel Engine Oil) for several years for many miles in several GM diesels & have no complaints.

Is this your first change, if so IMO you should have done it long ago? After that I would go off the dic.

Yes it my first change. Dealer said to go by DIC. At first it looked like change would happen at 6,000, then it seemed to be stuck. I will get it in this week and get it done.

Dealer said to go by DIC.

That's what they are told to say in training.

I'm glad your changing it now. I change at 7500.

Delo every 9000 to 10 thousand miles. I was changing it at 6 thousand but the lab analysis looks identical at 10K as it does at 6K.

Yup.....I wait until the light tells me so......usually about 9k. With biodiesel the oil stays very very clean.

i know that in those VW TDI's, guys go 10K REGARDLESS. they use a 505.01 synthetic. wouldnt they require their oil to be changed more often than use because they are smaller and rev higher? also, over at tdi.com, i've read that changing their oils TOO often is a bad idea because the oil doesn't really "get into it's groove" of lubricating until about 3,000miles.
so you'd think that on a GOOD synthetic we'd be able to go a lot longer than we do.... but of course oil analysis' and such are what we are going by.

i know mannytranny will be able to elaborate more on this, i've seen him on that site. i haven't joined it yet but will when i buy my jetta.

Yessir....there is a new generation of diesel oils out there......mostly used with ULSD europe diesel, but some distributors have gotten them over here. 507 oils. In europe, they are supposed to be good for 20-30k miles. There have been a few people over on the TDIclub that tried them on biodiesel/ulsd and found that the oil is good for a long long time. I have never seen people be more anal about oil than over there...but I guess thats a good thing. One caveat.....the oil is 11 bucks a quart.

I go 10k in my TDI. Its what the manual reccomends, so you know that its very conservative.

All of those three digit numbers are VW designations for different grades of oil.

The older TDI's need 505.00 oil, the Pumpe Deuse cars (2004+) require 505.01 oils. There is also a 506.00 oil intended for gains in fuel economy. According to the TDIclub, it really works. 507.00 oil is supposed to be a long life/good mileage oil. 506 and 507 oils are synth, the others may or may not be.

I did my first at 1530 miles, as well as changed the Diff grease and gave it it's first lube of the synthetic lube I use. You'll want to look at some of the DIY's on the lube and change a few of the zerts so they are easier to get to. With a new clean truck it's way easier underneath.

I changed mine plus filter when I got it home. I'm paranoid about the cleanlyness of the engine parts at assembly. Maybe I'm wierd but I worked at a engine plant and I don't see how they can clean every oil galley or passage way of chips or debris completely?
