I just did a drain and filter change and have been doing a lot of checks to make sure I've got the right amount of fluid. When doing the change I put in 7 quarts of Transynd and filled the filter full.

Now when checking the fluid cold and engine not running the fluid is coming way up on the stick beyond the hot area. When checking with the engine running and tranny temps around 150 or more then fluid is right in the middle of the hot area.

Am I checking the fluid level correctly? I just want to make sure I have this right as I will be towing in the mountains in a few days.

Yes, check with engine running. When it's cold it should be around the cold mark. Remember the full hot mark is when its HOT. I think many folks overfill their tranny this way by filling to the Hot mark under normal driving conditions. Anywhere on the hash marks is good. I never worry about it when its in the zone. I wait till I'm towing my trailer during the summer in the mountains and it good and HOT before I top off. Hot means HOT ....not warm nor overheated....Bill

Our manuals state that HOT atf (for level checking purposes) is 180-200F.

I Had The Same Thing Happen To Me.checked It While Cold And Figured It Should Be Some Where On The Cold Range.but Checked It While Hot And It Was Fine.
