: Slightly different CAT pre-OEM Install
DMAX2DAMAX 09-04-2003, 10:19 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gifCheck out the CAT Filter pics in "My Link" to see a slight variation on the frame rail mounted Cat Filter. I decided to make a mounting bracket that would utilize the 2 existing holes in the vertical wall of the frame rail instead of drilling holes on top and using a piece of angle stock. I heated and bent the 3" flat stock to fit.
I also plan to add a skid plate that will mount to the lower bolt of the filter bracket. I'll post pics of that too when complete.
I drilled and tapped the inlet and outlet of the filter head to accept the 3/8" NPT tp 1/2" ID hose so I wouldn't create a restriction with the smaller original size.
I lost less than a cup of fuel when I cut the line. I filled the inlet side of the new CAT filter with clean fuel and attached it to the head. The truck started and has run fine ever since with no priming, stalling or faltering at all.

Look at that baby! Nice install. I felt a difference after installing my CAT. Smooooother acceleration.
gwmayes 09-04-2003, 11:51 PM Clean install, good job. Mr X and I would have a bit of a problem with this location. The transfer flow 45 gallon replacement tank occupies this space. Still contemplating a solution for me. I'm a little gunshy of the wheel well location in cold climates and I do tow north in the winter time. Thinking, thinking, .......

Frank Blum 09-05-2003, 12:14 AM Very nice! You must be in the maintenance business. Later! Frank
Diesel Power 09-05-2003, 12:20 AM i originally was going to put my filter there but didn't because mounting it by the back tire got it a bit higher up, kept me from climbing under it to change, and most important- didn't get in the way of my TF 45 gal tank :).
that looks like the best frame-rail solution i've seen to date. great job! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley10.gif
rdixon 09-05-2003, 06:00 PM I'm getting ready to install my Nicktane filter and I tried to find some inline valves so I could shut off the fuel lines when changing - but I couldn't find any. Has anyone changed their filter yet without shutoff valves? If so, was there much fuel that drained out when you removed the filter? I'm going to install without the valves and hope there isn't too much fuel drain when I pull the filter.

Roegs 09-06-2003, 04:00 AM I think this is probably the cleanest frame mount I've seen. DMAX2DAMAX is using a Perma-cool head vs. the CAT head. Does anyone see any issues with this? It appears that the mods done to the head would allow a higher flow through the filter than if the CAT head was used.
Diesel Power 09-06-2003, 04:40 AM The cat head flows PLENTY.. no worries there at all... as for shutoff valves.. i took my filter off the other day to see, and it dripped a bit but didn't pour out.. no worries for me... i did crack the oem beed screw first to releave pressure..
Phil_to_DMAX 09-06-2003, 08:09 PM Looks great! What is the part number for the filter head? Also, I've been hesitant to cut into the stock line. Did you try and "flare" or bump the tips of the factory, rigid line or did you just slip your hoses over the cut pipe? Thanks.
Phil B.
Chevysrus 09-10-2003, 02:27 AM How many miles on yours now Nick? Can't believe you took it off and resisted the urge to cut into it LOL http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Must have been hard to screw it back on!
Diesel Power 09-10-2003, 02:41 AM yes it was hard...but i actually didn't unscrew it..i removed it with the head.. had i unscrewed it i would have had to cut it open... i know my limits! i ahve about 9500 miles right now...
firelt 09-10-2003, 09:28 AM DMAX2DAMAX------------- IF YOU EVER HAVE TROUBLE WITH YOUR HOSES HOOKED TO YOUR OEM FUEL LINE YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY COMPRESSION FITTINGS,I USED THEM ON MY CAT INSTALL THEY MAKE A CLEAN AND EASY JOB,I MADE AN EXTRA PIECE OF HOSE THAT I CAN FIT BETWEEN MY TWO COMPRESSION FITTING IF I EVER HAD TROUBLE WITH THE FILTER ON A TRIP OR JUST AWAY FROM HOME SO I COULD GET BACK,LOOK AT BY PIC'S AND YOU CAN SEE THE PARTS I USED, THE VALVES WERE ONLY 6 BUCKS A PIECE,MIKE
DMAX2DAMAX 09-10-2003, 10:29 AM Mike,
Thanks! I saw your excellent install </v:stroke></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:f></v:ulas></v:path><o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit"></o:lock></v:shape>http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif</v:imagedata></v:shape>pictures when you first posted them, unfortunately for me that was several days after http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif</v:imagedata></v:shape>I had mine on. I was looking for the parts to do what you did and was having some difficulty finding them so I went with what I had. I got the idea for the Push Locks from hoot and I really liked the clean look but I wasn't able to come up with what you did on the cut line. I used two clamps on each line, which has worked for me on a number of other applications in the past, so we'll see. But I hate how they look! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif</v:imagedata></v:shape> I remember while growing up in my Grandfather’s garage when I would ask him about a problem I was having, he'd always ask me, “what did you do to the car last?” I'd tell him this or that and he would usually say, "while you were doing that you did this," and sure enough I was the cause of the problem I was troubleshooting. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif</v:imagedata></v:shape> So for now, for this particular mod,* I'm sticking with the old adage, "if it ain't broke don't fix it." I have had zero problems, no leaks, no air (that I know of Mr X http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif</v:imagedata></v:shape>), no stalls, faltering, nothing but good clean fuel now being sent to my DMAX by the new Quad Stealth, with lots of power to spin my new 315's!<v:shape id=_x0000_i1030 style="WIDTH: 11.25pt; HEIGHT: 11.25pt" alt=""
Just remember guys, when mounting hose over cut steel line it is very difficult to get an airtight seal without a raised sealing rib formed into the steel line.
Vacuum leaks are very difficult to detect.
If I was doing it I would definately use furrel type fittings.
Roegs 09-10-2003, 01:26 PM Mike...Nice intstall. do you have any PN's for the compression fillings that you used?
Victory Red 09-10-2003, 10:40 PM I too am waiting for some cut open Cat pics. I've got mine(post oem) with around 6500 miles on it. I changed my OEM at just a little over 13000k and cut it just to see that it was about 1/3 used.
Also I'm also running the 750 short, with a 749 long for a spare. I'm curious to see if the larger filter has any effect on the system. Anyhow hopefully I'll hit 10k before the snow flies up here. I'm curious to see what the media looks like inside and how used it gets.
firelt 09-10-2003, 10:41 PM Roegs---- I POSTED THEM OVER ON THE DIESEL PAGE NOT TO LONG AGO,THAT SITE IS DOWN RIGHT KNOW BUT WHEN ITS BACK UP I WILL FIND THEM AND SEND THEM TO YOU,SORRY I CAN FIND MY RECEITE AT HOME BUT I THINK WITH ALL THE FITTINGS ,VALVES ,AND HOSE IT WAS AROUND 45.00,I GOT THEM AT A LOCAL HYDRAULIC STORE,IF YOU CAN'T FIND THEM I WOULD BE GLAD TO GET THEM FOR YOU,MIKE
Roegs 09-10-2003, 11:59 PM Firelt....now that you mention it, I do remember you posting them at the dieselpage. I can take a look when they are back up. Thanks for the offer!
Jomar 09-11-2003, 12:32 AM Hey Nick, Has anyone you know of had any leaks after removing the eom fuel line from the tank and putting the hoses for the Cat filter on the steel lines. I just pushed the 7/16th hose on all the way to the ring and clamped them with a spiral clamp. I thought I was back in the mountains of Colorado when I started looking for 7/16th fuel hose though.
I really like the forumand keep up the good work.
Jomar
Jomar 09-11-2003, 12:38 AM Dmax2Damax, how far is the bottom of the filter below the frame rail ?
Jomar
Diesel Power 09-11-2003, 02:53 AM i haven't had any problems with my 15 installs, and i've got about 30 kits out there and haven't heard of any problems... one guy forgot to tighten the bleed screw on teh cat head but once he did all was fine :)
rdixon 09-11-2003, 07:46 AM No problems http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif with my Nicktane kit since installation. I was extra careful about checking the tightness of hoses and clamps because I didn't want to go "down under" again. Not to mention, my wife is still complaining about the small amout of diesel fuel that dripped onto the garage floor during the install. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I haven't found anything that will get the stain out - at least the diesel smell is finally out of the garage.
DMAX2DAMAX 09-11-2003, 02:12 PM Dmax2Damax, how far is the bottom of the filter below the frame rail ?
Jomar
It looks to be about 1/2" or less on the Perma Cool filter head I used. Which is why I plan to add a skid plate just below it using the lower bolt hole and the frame rail to keep it in place. I'll post pics after I've done it, I'm just not in a hurry cause I don't plan any off roadin just yet.
DMAX2DAMAX 09-11-2003, 02:21 PM Looks great! What is the part number for the filter head? Also, I've been hesitant to cut into the stock line. Did you try and "flare" or bump the tips of the factory, rigid line or did you just slip your hoses over the cut pipe? Thanks.
Phil B.
Phil,
I don't have a part number for just the filter head. It was part of a filter kit, Perma Cooll Kit #81074. I got the entire kit on ebay for like $10. I compared it to the CAT and since I wasn't gonna use a primer I decided it would work for me. I would have used their filter too except I couldn't get any real consensus on the quality of the filter element so I went with the CAT.
I did not flare or bump the fuel line but chose to use 2 clamps which has worked well in the past on many other applications. So far, so good! No air that I know of! No stalls, falters, etc, so I should be OK!

retiredalaskan 09-11-2003, 05:48 PM I'm about ready to install the cat filter, but i noticed that the center hole does not have an o ring is it supposed to??I've got 4 extra filters and when i checked them no o ring either. Let me know if you could..thanks'' alaska@juno.com
TX-DMAX 09-11-2003, 09:26 PM Firelt---Nice install on your filter. I noticed your filter does not hang below the frame. Are you using the smaller 750 cat filter? If you are, how many miles have you got on it now. Maybe the smaller filter would be the way to go in this position if you didn't have to change it every few thousand miles.
firelt 09-11-2003, 10:50 PM TX-DMAX----YES I AM USING THE 750 (SMALLER) THE ANGLE BRACKET I USED HELPS KEEP IT UP ALITTLE HIGHER ALSO,I ONLY HAVE ABOUT 1000 ON IT SO FAR(WITHOUT ANY STALLS,LEAKS ,OR AN PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER),I HAVE HEARD THAT PEOPLE ARE HOPING TO GET 7500,THE FILTER IS PRICED LESS THEN 20.00 AND I PLAN ON CHANGING AT 5000,MIKE
TX-DMAX 09-12-2003, 08:45 AM Thanks firelt----I have deceided to go with a set up like yours, we have a Cat dealer here and have already checked prices and the 750 is $10.28 plus tax, so changing at 5000 miles sounds like the way to go. Still checking the hose making places for all the hardware to put it all together. Have already made the bracket for the head, just need to get the hardware for the filter head and fuel lines now. Thanks for your pictures and your information on this. I have looked and read posts for a long time and your's is the one I like the most. My dealer said no problem on warranty as long as I add the filter pre to the OME one. Off the the parts store. Ron http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
firelt 09-12-2003, 09:50 AM TX-DMAX------------------thanks ,good luck on the install,if you have trouble with finding parts let me know, one tip fill the new filter with diesel and that way you only pump the oem primer once or twice and it will start right up,mike
Kyle03D 09-12-2003, 01:42 PM DMAX2DAMAX or anyone,
How did you go about cutting the steel lines in your installation? I'm thinking about metal shavings.
Thanks
Kyle
DMAX2DAMAX 09-12-2003, 02:36 PM Kyle03D,
I did what I read in other posts, I used a mini pipe cutter. I was thinking just like you are so I did check for shavings and couldn't detect any. I can't say with certainty that it didn't produce any shavings but it is less likely than with a saw. Because it is pre-OEM the OEM provides a safety net as well, as I can't imagine shavings under 10 microns. The discharge of the small amount of fuel may also help to eliminate any possible shavings when the line actually opens and spills. Other than that, I don't know what else one might do to insure none gets in. Perhaps others will post some other thoughts.

swilk 01-30-2004, 02:20 PM I know that this is digging up an old post .... but I really like the looks of firelt's install. I think that from a purely cosmetic standpoint it is the best that I have seen. What is the outside diameter of the stock steel lines? Also, have you had any trouble this winter ..... it has been really cold here for the last couple of days .... I run an additive so hopefully gelling would not be a problem but I would like to get the feedback of others on whether or not a fuel heater on the secondary filter located under the truck would be a necessity.
John R 01-30-2004, 02:58 PM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I haven't found anything that will get the stain out - at least the diesel smell is finally out of the garage.
Use Tide Laundry detergent, wet floor pour on Tide, scrub with A push broom and rinse.
Stain will be all gone

The stain will diminish w/time. In fact, our local concrete contractor actually sprays diesel on the uncured cement to protect it from drying out too fast ~ did so w/mine and in time it went back to normal. Says its just as good but much less expensive than the com'l product. Nothing to sweat about ~ FWIW, know of no lady that likes the smell of diesel. Also, in SEA we would diesel down the wood flooring of our hutch thinking it would keep the rats, termites and other creapy crawley thingys away. If the missus says anything re smells ~ ask her if she's seen any big rats lately. BTW, learned first hand that rats don't mind it but she wouldn't know http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
firelt 01-30-2004, 10:15 PM RUMAXED---- THAT WAS MY WED SITE PIC'S ,I GOT THOSE AT A HYDRAULIC STORE,BUT YOU CAN FIND THEM AT HOME DEPOT,MIKE
Diesel Power 01-30-2004, 10:33 PM FWIW,
i've removed my pre-oem filter (in front of rear tire) several times and didn't get more thana couple drops. if i would have put a paper plate or a shop towel down that would have more than sufficed. if you mount it on the frame rail i think the valves will be more important due to the lower mounting in relation to the fuel tank.
