I HAVE AN 04' DMAX THAT I WANT TO CHANGE THE TRANSFER CASE FLUID IN... FIRST OFF, I AM HAVING TROUBLE FINDING THE FILL PLUG.... I SEE THE DRAIN PLUG, BUT NO FILL??? ALSO, ON THE TOP OF THE TRANSFER CASE IS A SMALL RUBBER PLUG THAT IS ROUGHLY RECTANGULAR IN SHAPE AND CAN BE PULLED OUT.... IS THAT THE FILL LOCATION OR WHAT IS IT USED FOR?? I AM WORRIED ABOUT IT FALLING OUT OR DRY ROTTING TO PIECES SOME DAY. MY BROTHER IN LAW HAD A 1995 DODGE P/U WITH A RUBBER FILL PLUG IN HIS DIFFERENTIAL.... AFTER ABOUT 5 YEARS IT DRY ROTTED, FELL OUT, AND LET ALL HIS FLUID GET CONTAMINATED WHICH ENDED UP COSTING HIM A REAR END... WHEN WE ASKED THE DODGE DEALER WHY THEY WOULD DO SOMETHING SO STUPID, HE SAID IT WAS WELL KNOWN THAT THE PLUGS WOULD DRY ROT OUT, AND MAYBE THEY'D GET SOME SERVICE WORK OUT OF IT!! TOTAL BS!:badidea:

What is the type of fluid the transfer case takes and the capacity? I may try and change mine this weekend

Be sure to use a 6-point 18 mm socket to remove/install drain and fill plug, and not too tight. These magnesium plugs are very soft, and will round or damage easily.
Also a little teflon thread paste seems to prevent plug for seizing in place, ensuring easier plug removal next time.

Now that you mention it, the plugs did have what looked liek pipe dope on them and I did use the 6 point as they were torqued in there!!!
Also, what color is most everyones fluid when they have 50k on the truck? Mine was still very pink/red with a slight darkish tint. I am unsure of the past owner or the dealer I bought it from did the 50k maintenance.

I didn't know the maintenance of the previous owner either...changed the front/rear/tranny/transfer case fluids...t-case was red...changed it to Mobil 1 synthetic (didn't have 2 quarts of Transynd left from tranny fluid change).

Does your truck have the manual shift lever mounted on the floor, or 3 buttons on the dash or 4 buttons on the dash???
Depending on what you have, Dexron III is only for the 1st and 2nd one. The full time AWD with 4 buttons uses something else.
