Where did you mount the air supply, and are you using a compressor or just reservoir?

Mike, I love it. That looks like a complicated setup there in the cab. How did you run that?

hoot
05-05-2004, 07:29 PM
Scott..

It is a contraption. I tried to mount it on the side of the 4x4 pedestal but the seat hits it when you move it up. On my GMC it was mounted against the tunnel but on this truck that was in the way too.

There is nothing compliceated about it at all. It's a handle actuated valve. One end air goes in, the other end it goes out.

Two airlines. One comes from the tank and comes into the "In" side of the valve. The other goes out of the valve and to the horn.

I may change it, paint it or fab a cover plate.

Mike, you're a talented guy. I can barely open my hood, let alone install something like that.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Frank it's more of a novelty. Yes it looks crazy to go through all that for a novelty. I mentioned before it is dangerous to blow it to close to people so I watch out for that. It's not used as a horn... per say. I still have my regular beep.

I had a guy pull along side me today in a new F150. He says... "Man that's one heck of a tailpipe"

I said "Hey thanks... and I have a horn to go with it"

You should have seen his reaction when I hit it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Brusters is a local Ice Cream shop that on any given summer night is crowded with customers outside. Showoffs like us cruise the place if we're in the area.

We have cops too but around here a toot or a loud exhaust driving by once in a while is not high on their list of to-do's.

Years ago when I was a teenager they used to pull you over if you had shackles on your rear leaf springs and if your car was too loud or if it was rusty, believe it or not. Very rare today for the police to get invovlved in petty stuff like that now.

They do ticket the kids for those LED windshield washer lights though. Only if they are blue or red (emergency colors).

<DIV>http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifOk, hoot...</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I gotta ask. How much pressure do you need to operate that horn. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gifI've been gigglin' for ten minutes thinkin' of the fun I could have with that thing. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I don't think the old lady would dig too much on that set-up being on her '04 LLY, but I've been thinking about a new horn for my Jeep for a long time. It already looks funny with the spring-over suspension on top of lift springs and 38.5 swampers. The loco horn would be cool.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I'm going to research it but any info would help. </DIV>

100-140 psi. Can be done with an onboard compressor/tank but you need a decent size reserve tank or a couple smaller ones = to like 5 gallons. Without reserve the blast falls off quickly. Everybody I know that used a 2 1/2 gallon tank has said they needed a bigger tank. The compressor is a big expense unless you already have one onboard. Good ones use a York A/C compressor driven by a winch motor. Like $800-900. You also could use a smaller compressed cylinder than I use. The smaller ones you can be bought outright. All you pay for is to fill. They last a decent amount of time. The one I use lasted almost three months and cost $15 to refill.

Horns like mine, used, sell for around $400 on ebay.
The valve I use is about $90.
The rest is hose and the cylinder.Edited by: hoot

I hate the OEM horn on the Dodge. It sounds too weak for a truck, hell the turbo is louder than the horn. When someone is going to pull in front of me on the freeway I just let the turbo do the work instead of the horn.

It sounds like a car horn. The train horn helps a little.
