turbo,

i used a 5 ton gear puller from sears, everything was goig easily until I got the the drivers side to finish the install. that thing was a bear ! could not get in. put the old key back in and ordered the torsion bar removal tool. I had to use BOTH the get the key in enough to reinstall the nut and bolt.

the tool does give you more leverage, it is like a modified C clamp. I could definetely tell the difference.

I have done them with a c-clamp, 5-ton two jaw gear puller, and then got smart and used the GM tool.....by far the easiest and it keep everything intact with no fear of anything slipping off under pressure.

I have a ball joint press that is like a c clamp but much more rigid. Uses a 7/8 socket on an impact to drive it. Similier to GM tool, but does not have the locatign pin on the end of shaft.

The gear puller I used was a bit small for the job but it worked. The thing to look out for is the threaded rod being long enough. The bigger puller I bought for the occasion wouldn't travel far enough.

If it doesn't feel safe it probably isn't.

It is a Kent Moore tool #J-36202-A. Do a search on the web as I think there a a few supply places out there or call KM and order it. I think it runs about $75. http://kent-moore.spx.com/

Another helpfull hint is to remove the lower shock mount and jack the truck by the frame so the wheels are in the air. This gives a little more down travel as the shocks limit it. I just did this installing a lift last week on an 01 HD but used a nasty backyard trick with a jack and a short impact extension.

Another place to buy the unloader is http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/OTC-7822A.html

That is where I bought mine.

Be sure to coat the lead screw threads with anti-sieze compound before you use it, the tool will work much easier.
